Chelsea’s Mike Penders compared to Thibaut Courtois as future number one hopes grow

Chelsea's long-term investment in Mike Penders is beginning to look increasingly justified after the Belgian youngster earned glowing praise from those who helped shape his career. Having spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, the 20-year-old returns to Stamford Bridge with growing expectations and comparisons to one of the club's greatest goalkeepers, Thibaut Courtois.

Penders arrived from Genk in a deal worth around £17 million, despite having made only a handful of senior appearances at the time. The transfer surprised many in Belgium, but former Genk goalkeeping coach Gilbert Roex believes Chelsea recognised a talent capable of following a similar path to Courtois.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Roex admitted the fee initially seemed remarkable given Penders' limited first-team experience. However, he praised Chelsea's recruitment team for identifying the goalkeeper's potential long before he became established at senior level.

The similarities between Penders and Courtois extend beyond their shared background at Genk. Both goalkeepers stand 6ft 7in, emerged through the Belgian club's renowned academy and earned early reputations for their composure under pressure.

Roex believes Penders possesses the mentality required to reach the highest level, describing him as one of the fastest-improving young goalkeepers he has worked with.

Initially, playing with the ball at his feet was considered the weakest aspect of his game. Through years of focused coaching, however, that weakness has become one of his greatest strengths. During his loan spell at Strasbourg, Penders regularly operated well outside his penalty area as part of Liam Rosenior's possession-based system, recording one of the highest average starting positions among goalkeepers in Europe's top five leagues.

That approach occasionally led to costly mistakes, but it also highlighted the confidence and decision-making Chelsea value in modern goalkeepers.

Having followed Chelsea's recruitment strategy over recent seasons, the move also fits the club's wider model of signing elite young talent before their market value significantly increases. However, it remains too early to conclude whether Penders will follow the same trajectory as Courtois, whose achievements place him among the finest goalkeepers of his generation.

Chelsea are not expected to hand Penders the number one shirt immediately. Robert Sánchez remains Xabi Alonso's first-choice goalkeeper, although the club view Penders as genuine competition after Filip Jørgensen failed to establish himself as a consistent starter.

The Belgian also benefited from training alongside Courtois with the national team during the Club World Cup, where sources close to Belgium's first-choice goalkeeper reportedly indicated that Courtois was impressed by both Penders' ability and his professionalism.

Roex believes his former pupil's calm personality could ultimately prove his greatest asset.

"We have produced a lot of great goalkeepers, but Mike is the one with the potential to reach the same level as Thibaut," he told BBC Sport. "His sense of calmness is gold in goalkeeping."

That is high praise considering Genk's academy has also developed international goalkeepers including Koen Casteels, Nordin Jackers and Maarten Vandevoordt.

Penders is expected to compete directly with Sánchez throughout pre-season as Chelsea assess their goalkeeping hierarchy ahead of the new Premier League campaign. While Sánchez currently remains the favourite to begin the season as first choice, the club clearly view Penders as a long-term successor rather than simply a developmental prospect. His performances in training and domestic cup competitions could determine how quickly he challenges for a regular starting place.
