Ajax submit offer for Julian Brandt but Leeds United lead transfer race

Ajax have made a contract offer to former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Brandt, but Leeds United remain in pole position to secure the Germany international's signature.

According to Sky Sports Germany, the 48-cap Germany international is considering proposals from both Ajax and Leeds after becoming a free agent following the expiry of his Borussia Dortmund contract earlier this month.

Brandt has been linked with Ajax throughout the summer, with reports in Germany last month revealing the Eredivisie club had opened talks with the attacking midfielder.

Those links have now progressed, with Sky Sports reporting that Ajax have formally presented the 30-year-old with a contract offer.

PSV Eindhoven have also previously been credited with an interest, but Ajax appear to have taken the lead among Dutch clubs by submitting an official proposal.

Despite Ajax's approach, Leeds United are understood to have the strongest chance of completing the deal.

Brandt has made no secret of his ambition to test himself in the Premier League, with Sky Sports Germany reporting that the former Borussia Dortmund star is "fascinated" by the prospect of playing in England.

Italian clubs could also emerge as contenders should interest from Serie A materialise, but Leeds are currently regarded as the player's preferred destination.

Leeds have already stepped up their efforts behind the scenes.

Brandt's father travelled to Leeds earlier this month as discussions over a potential transfer gathered pace, determination to secure the experienced playmaker.

The Yorkshire club are also aware that several other teams are monitoring the situation and are keen to finalise an agreement before further competition develops.

After leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of his contract, Brandt has become one of the most attractive free agents available this summer.

His experience in the Bundesliga, European competition and international football makes him an appealing option for clubs seeking creativity without paying a transfer fee.

While Ajax have positioned themselves in the race with a formal offer, Leeds' Premier League status currently gives the English club a significant advantage.

Julian Brandt is expected to decide on his next club in the coming weeks. Leeds United will continue working to complete a deal, while Ajax hope their contract offer can persuade the Germany international to choose Amsterdam over a long-awaited move to the Premier League.
