Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United exit stalls over £325,000-a-week wages

Marcus Rashford's future at Manchester United remains uncertain, with the England international struggling to secure a permanent move away from Old Trafford despite interest from several clubs.

The 28-year-old still has two years remaining on a contract worth £325,000 per week, and that salary has become the biggest obstacle to completing a transfer this summer.

After impressing during his loan spell at Barcelona last season, Rashford had hoped to secure a permanent move to the Catalan club.

However, Barcelona ultimately chose to strengthen elsewhere, completing deals for Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi instead of meeting Manchester United's reported £26 million asking price.

The Spanish giants were prepared to discuss another loan agreement, but United have made it clear they are prioritising a permanent sale.

While there has been no shortage of interest in Rashford, his salary has complicated negotiations.

Manchester United are keen to remove one of the club's highest earners from the wage bill as Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues efforts to reduce costs across the organisation.

Potential suitors have struggled to match Rashford's current earnings, making a permanent transfer increasingly difficult.

The forward has also rejected approaches from Turkish giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe, further reducing his options.

According to reports in Italy, Manchester United have discussed the possibility of including Rashford in negotiations with Roma over midfielder Manu Koné.

The Serie A club value the France international at around €60 million, but Rashford's wages are understood to be far beyond Roma's financial structure.

Even if the clubs could agree a transfer package, the England international would reportedly become Serie A's highest-paid player by a considerable margin, making such a move highly unlikely.

Rashford signed his current long-term contract in 2023 following the best campaign of his career.

After scoring 30 goals and providing 12 assists during the 2022-23 season, Manchester United rewarded the academy graduate with a significant pay rise, increasing his salary from £200,000 to £325,000 per week.

At the time, then-manager Erik ten Hag and football director John Murtough viewed Rashford as a cornerstone of the club's future.

Three years later, that lucrative contract has become one of the biggest obstacles preventing both player and club from moving on.

Rashford is currently on holiday following England's World Cup campaign and is expected to return to Manchester United after his extended break. Unless a club can find a financial solution to his wages, the forward appears increasingly likely to begin pre-season at Old Trafford despite both parties preferring a permanent transfer this summer.
