Michael Owen believes Manchester United must make an exception to their contract policy and do everything possible to secure Bruno Fernandes on a new deal.
The Red Devils captain is entering the final two years of his current contract, with the club hoping to reach an agreement before the new season gets underway.
Owen urges United to make exception
Fernandes enjoyed another outstanding campaign, registering a Premier League-record 21 assists and further strengthening his status as Manchester United's most influential player.
Despite turning 32 next month, Owen insists age should not prevent United from offering improved terms.
Speaking to GOAL, the former United striker said: "If I was Manchester United, I would absolutely do everything."
He added: "Sometimes, a player is just so important that you have to break the rules."
Owen believes Fernandes is simply too valuable for United to risk entering the season without his long-term future being secured.
Club captain remains central figure
Fernandes has been at Old Trafford since January 2020 and has established himself as one of the club's modern greats.
The Portugal international has scored 107 goals in 327 appearances and has won the club's Player of the Year award five times.
His current contract expires in 2027, although Manchester United hold an option to extend it by a further year.
Silvestre wants more trophies
Former United defender Mikael Silvestre also backed Fernandes to remain at Old Trafford but believes major silverware is still needed to cement his legacy.
While praising the midfielder's consistency during difficult seasons, Silvestre argued Premier League or Champions League success would elevate Fernandes into the very highest category of Manchester United legends.
