Brighton are close to completing a Deadline Day loan move that will send highly rated Colombian midfielder Matías Orozco to CD Castellón for the 2026/27 season.

The 18-year-old only recently agreed his move from Deportivo Cali to Brighton, but the Seagulls have always planned to loan him out immediately to secure regular senior football.

According to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, Orozco has started his medical ahead of joining Castellón until June 2027, with only minor details remaining before the deal can be completed.

No purchase option in Orozco loan

One significant aspect of the agreement is Brighton's decision not to include a purchase option.

Castellón will therefore only have Orozco for one season before the midfielder returns to Brighton next summer.

That structure underlines the Premier League club's long-term plans for the youngster, who they regard as a significant prospect for the future.

Orozco is completing his medical on Deadline Day and the remaining paperwork must now be finalised in time for Castellón to register him.

Journalist Julián Capera also reports that the intention behind the move is for Orozco to “continue his development process” in Spain.

Brighton choose La Liga 2 for youngster

A temporary move had been anticipated since Brighton agreed to sign Orozco from Deportivo Cali.

The Seagulls wanted the midfielder to accumulate senior minutes rather than immediately compete for first-team football at the Amex Stadium.

Spain was subsequently identified as the destination before Castellón emerged as the chosen club.

The La Liga 2 side should provide Orozco with a competitive environment for his introduction to European football.

Castellón finished sixth in Spain's second division last season, qualifying for the promotion playoffs before being eliminated by Almería in the first round.

Orozco will now hope to contribute to another promotion challenge.

Orozco remains part of Brighton's long-term plans

Brighton agreed a deal worth around $4.8million (€4.1m) plus bonuses to sign Orozco from Deportivo Cali, acquiring 85% of his rights while the Colombian club retained the remaining 15%.

Rather than immediately introducing him to the Premier League, Brighton have opted for a more gradual development pathway.

The midfielder will spend the entire campaign adapting to European football in eastern Spain before returning to England.

Brighton can then assess his progress in the summer of 2027 and determine whether he is ready to join their first-team squad or requires another developmental step.

The absence of any purchase option gives the Seagulls complete control over that decision.
