Benjamin Šeško has expressed his disappointment after being forced to withdraw from Slovenia duty because of a recurrence of the shin problem that has disrupted his Manchester United season.
The 23-year-old missed United’s 1-1 draw at Fulham and will now sit out the international break as he focuses on his recovery.
The issue is particularly frustrating because it dates back to the end of last season and already caused Šeško to miss pre-season. He has subsequently been restricted to just 206 minutes of competitive football this campaign.
Šeško focused on recovery after Slovenia withdrawal
Šeško addressed his absence through Instagram after withdrawing from the Slovenia squad.
“I am very sorry that I will have to miss the national team’s upcoming matches,” he wrote. “I have always played for Slovenia – and always will – with heart and pride.”
The striker explained that his immediate priority is recovering fully before returning for club and country.
“I’m already working on returning to the pitch as soon as possible to help both the national team and my club once again.”
Šeško also backed his Slovenia teammates before adding that he “can’t wait” to represent his country again.
Recurring problem gives Carrick another concern
The bigger question for Manchester United is how long Šeško will now be unavailable.
His original shin problem was suffered against Liverpool in May and continued into the summer, preventing him from completing a normal pre-season.
The latest recurrence means United are once again assessing the issue, with medical tests required to establish its extent. There is currently no confirmed timetable for his return.
That uncertainty comes at an awkward moment for Michael Carrick.
Šeško had only recently started working his way back towards a more significant role before this latest setback. United's attacking options have also been affected by Marcus Rashford’s hip injury, which forced him to withdraw from England duty.
The international break at least provides Šeško with additional recovery time without missing another immediate Premier League fixture.
For United, however, the priority will be finding a longer-term solution to an injury that has now followed their striker from last season into the new campaign.
