Leon Goretzka returned to Munich for Oktoberfest last weekend as the Aston Villa midfielder continues his recovery from a knee problem that has delayed his start to life in England.
The 31-year-old joined Villa on a free transfer during the summer after ending an eight-year spell with Bayern Munich, but he has yet to make his competitive debut for Unai Emery’s side.
According to TZ, Goretzka travelled back to his former home for the opening weekend of Oktoberfest and was present at the Theresienwiese on Sunday.
Goretzka maintains strong Bayern connections
Goretzka’s appearance in Munich is hardly surprising given the strength of his connection with Bayern.
The midfielder made 312 appearances during eight years with the German giants, winning seven Bundesliga titles and the Champions League among numerous trophies.
TZ reports that Goretzka “didn’t want to miss” the opening weekend of Oktoberfest, where Bayern players traditionally gather during the festival.
Joshua Kimmich was among those present after Bayern’s 7-0 victory over Union Berlin, giving Goretzka an opportunity to reconnect with former teammates.
The report does not suggest there was anything unusual about his attendance beyond the fact he remains unavailable for Villa.
Villa still waiting for Goretzka return
For Aston Villa, the more significant issue remains when Goretzka will finally be ready to play.
The Germany international arrived without a proper pre-season and has subsequently been dealing with irritation in his knee, preventing Emery from using one of his most experienced summer additions.
Previous reports in Germany have indicated that Villa’s October 10 meeting with Brentford could represent the earliest realistic opportunity for his return.
The current international break therefore provides Goretzka with additional recovery time.
Villa have recently started to build some momentum, including their 3-2 Premier League victory away at Tottenham, and getting Goretzka available would provide Emery with another experienced midfield option.
His Munich visit shows the former Bayern star remains closely connected to the city where he spent such a significant part of his career. Villa, however, will be more interested in seeing him fit enough to begin the next chapter.
