Aston Villa are on the verge of completing the signing of João Gomes after agreeing a £38 million deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the Brazil international.

According to the BBC, Gomes has already left Wolves' pre-season training camp in Portugal and is due to undergo a medical before finalising his move to Villa Park. The agreement is reportedly worth £34 million upfront, with a further £4 million in performance-related add-ons.

Villa strengthen midfield after key departures

Unai Emery identified midfield as a priority area following a summer of significant changes.

Villa recently sold Youri Tielemans to Manchester United in a deal worth around £35 million, while Amadou Onana is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a serious knee injury during the World Cup with Belgium.

Those departures accelerated Villa's search for a new midfielder, with Gomes emerging as their preferred target thanks to his Premier League experience and energetic style of play.

Villa beat Atlético Madrid to Gomes

Villa faced competition from Atlético Madrid but moved quickly to secure an agreement before the Spanish club could complete a deal.

The 25-year-old has impressed since joining Wolves from Flamengo in 2023, making 130 appearances and scoring seven goals during his time at Molineux.

Although Wolves endured a disappointing campaign that ended in relegation to the Championship, Gomes remained one of the club's standout performers, featuring 41 times in all competitions last season.

More business expected at Villa Park

The signing of Gomes is unlikely to be Aston Villa's final move of the transfer window.

The club are also reported to be closing in on Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, with negotiations continuing over what could become another major investment.

Villa are strengthening aggressively ahead of a demanding campaign that includes Champions League football, as Emery looks to build a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts after last season's Europa League success.
