Galatasaray have renewed their interest in Tottenham Hotspur forward Mathys Tel as the Turkish champions step up their search for a replacement following Mauro Icardi's departure.
The French youngster has been admired by Galatasaray for the past two seasons, and fresh reports in Turkey claim he has once again emerged as a leading target ahead of the new campaign.
Tel back on Galatasaray's shortlist
According to Galatasaray reporter Serhan Türk, the 21-year-old is back under consideration after Icardi's exit created a vacancy in attack.
Head coach Okan Buruk is said to value Tel's versatility, with the former Bayern Munich forward capable of playing across the front line.
“Mathys Tel, who plays for Tottenham and has been on Galatasaray’s radar for two seasons, has come back into the spotlight following Icardi’s departure,” he said.
“Coach Okan wants the player because of his ability to play in different positions in attack. There are also suitors from the Bundesliga for the young player, who meets the eligibility criteria.”
Bundesliga clubs are also believed to be monitoring the France youth international, increasing the competition for his signature should Tottenham become open to a deal.
Tottenham yet to decide
It remains unclear whether Tottenham are prepared to part ways with Tel this summer.
The forward featured regularly under Roberto De Zerbi last season and remains a player with significant long-term potential. Spurs invested heavily to secure his permanent signing from Bayern Munich, paying around €25 million after an initial loan deal worth €10 million.
Given that investment, Tottenham are unlikely to consider offers below the fee they paid, while Galatasaray have traditionally preferred loan deals rather than expensive permanent transfers.
Key Points
- Galatasaray have revived their interest in Mathys Tel.
- The Turkish champions want a replacement for Mauro Icardi.
- Bundesliga clubs are also monitoring the Tottenham forward.
- Spurs paid around €25 million to sign Tel permanently.
- Tottenham have not indicated they are willing to sell.
What's next?
Galatasaray are expected to explore the conditions of a potential deal in the coming weeks, but much will depend on Tottenham's plans for Tel. If Spurs decide the Frenchman remains part of Roberto De Zerbi's long-term project, a move is unlikely unless an attractive offer arrives.
Should Tottenham keep Mathys Tel for another season, or cash in if Galatasaray make an approach?
