Gregor Kobel rejected Newcastle United approach despite lucrative offer

Newcastle United made an approach for Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel during the summer transfer window, but the Switzerland international rejected the opportunity to move to St James’ Park.

The 28-year-old attracted interest from several major European clubs, with Newcastle among those considering him as they searched for a new goalkeeper.

According to BILD, the Magpies were prepared to offer Kobel “significantly more money” than he currently earns in Germany.

However, financial incentives were not enough to convince him.

Kobel believes Borussia Dortmund can compete for major trophies and decided remaining with the Bundesliga club was the best option for his career.

Kobel's decision was reportedly driven primarily by sporting ambitions.

The goalkeeper remains convinced he can win silverware with Dortmund and would only seriously consider leaving if he loses faith in the club's ability to challenge at the highest level.

That stance represents a significant show of confidence in Dortmund, particularly given the level of interest developing around him.

Real Madrid have also been linked with Kobel as they consider their long-term succession plan for Thibaut Courtois.

Kobel's Dortmund contract runs until 2028, meaning his future could soon become an important issue for the German club.

Dortmund will want to avoid reaching next summer without making progress over his longer-term future, when the goalkeeper would be entering the final year of his existing agreement.

Newcastle, meanwhile, appear unlikely to revive their pursuit.

The Magpies spent much of the summer considering potential replacements for Nick Pope before eventually signing Lukas Hornicek.

Hornicek has made a solid start to his Newcastle career, reducing the immediate need for another established goalkeeper.

The club also invested in Ewen Jaouen, who is regarded as a longer-term option for the position.

Those two additions mean Newcastle's goalkeeping department now appears well stocked, making another expensive pursuit of Kobel difficult to envisage.

Kobel may have rejected Newcastle during the summer, but the Magpies have responded by moving in a different direction rather than waiting for the Dortmund star to reconsider his future.

Attention now turns to Kobel's contract situation at Borussia Dortmund. His current deal expires in 2028, and the German club will want to strengthen their position before he enters its final year.

Newcastle appear to have moved on after strengthening their goalkeeping department during the summer. Unless their situation changes significantly, Kobel is unlikely to return to the top of their transfer agenda.
