Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has publicly addressed speculation surrounding his future after dismissing reports explaining why he rejected the chance to become the next Netherlands head coach.
Slot, who was dismissed by Liverpool at the end of May despite leading the club to the Premier League title just 12 months earlier, confirmed he decided against continuing discussions with the Dutch Football Association because he wants to remain in club management.
His statement follows reports suggesting negotiations collapsed over disagreements regarding salary and the length of the proposed contract.
Slot denies reports over Netherlands talks
In a statement released through Dutch publication Voetbal International, the 47-year-old insisted the speculation surrounding the negotiations was inaccurate.
"Over the past few weeks, and particularly the past few days, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy at the Dutch national team, suggesting that I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations, including regarding salary and contract duration.
"That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks."
Instead, Slot explained that his preference at this stage of his career is to work with players on a daily basis rather than in international football.
"At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team. And why I chose not to continue the talks and not to start negotiations on what a possible contract might look like."
Although he ruled himself out of contention on this occasion, Slot made it clear managing his country remains a long-term ambition.
"It would be a great honour to represent my country as national coach one day. However, this was not the right moment for me."
Former Liverpool boss waiting for next club opportunity
Slot has been without a club since leaving Anfield at the end of May.
The Dutchman enjoyed remarkable success during his lone season at Liverpool, delivering the Premier League title before his unexpected departure.
He was briefly linked with Fulham following Marco Silva's exit earlier this summer, but the London club ultimately appointed Alvaro Arbeloa, ending speculation over a swift Premier League return.
Club football remains the priority
Slot's latest comments leave little doubt over the direction he wants his career to take.
Rather than moving into international management, the former Feyenoord boss is prepared to wait for the right club opportunity.
