Gabriel Jesus to Napoli transfer edges closer as Arsenal await €20m bid

Napoli are moving closer to a position where they can make a formal approach for Gabriel Jesus, with the Serie A champions working to reshape their attacking options before opening talks with Arsenal.

Interest in the Brazilian striker has been established for several days, with reports indicating Arsenal would be prepared to consider offers starting at around €20 million (£17.3m). While no official bid has yet been submitted, developments in Italy suggest Napoli are laying the financial groundwork required to pursue a deal.

According to reports from Italy, Napoli's priority is reducing both their wage bill and the number of attacking players in Massimiliano Allegri's squad before committing funds to another forward.

The first major departure is set to be Romelu Lukaku, who is closing in on a move to Fenerbahce. The clubs are reported to have agreed a package worth €6m (£5.2m) plus a further €2m (£1.7m) in performance-related bonuses.

Only the structure of the payments remains to be finalised after Lukaku completed his medical. The Belgian is expected to travel to Istanbul shortly to sign a two-year contract.

His exit represents an important step, but it is not expected to be enough on its own to trigger Napoli's move for Jesus.

Napoli are also attempting to offload Noa Lang, with Ajax continuing their pursuit of the Dutch winger. However, that transfer is reportedly dependent on Ajax securing a replacement, with Mika Godts potentially joining Paris Saint-Germain.

Should both Lukaku and Lang depart, Napoli would significantly improve their financial flexibility and create room within the squad for another attacking signing.

There could yet be one more outgoing before negotiations with Arsenal accelerate.

Italian reports claim Napoli may also consider selling Lorenzo Lucca, further reducing Allegri's options in attack before bringing in a replacement.

That sequence of departures is becoming increasingly relevant for Arsenal, whose asking price for Jesus remains unchanged.

At this stage, there is no indication Napoli have submitted an official offer.

The reported valuation of €20m (£17.3m) therefore remains the benchmark if negotiations are to begin.

Jesus has previously been linked with a move to Naples after reports suggested he is open to joining the Italian club in search of more regular first-team football.

Despite making 27 appearances for Arsenal last season, the Brazilian started only nine matches, finding consistent opportunities difficult to come by amid strong competition for places.

Although the sample size is limited, Jesus has still contributed two league goals despite largely featuring from the bench.

Napoli's pursuit of Gabriel Jesus now appears to depend less on Arsenal and more on completing their own outgoing business.

If Lukaku's move to Fenerbahce is finalised, followed by the departures of Lang and potentially Lucca, the Serie A side would be in a much stronger position to test Arsenal's resolve with a formal bid.

Until then, the Gunners are expected to wait for concrete interest rather than negotiate on speculation, with their reported valuation remaining the reference point for any future discussions.
