Former Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia has urged supporters to be realistic about the club's Premier League title ambitions while defending under-pressure manager Michael Carrick.
United sit 13th after collecting just six points from their opening six league matches, with Saturday's 1-1 draw against Tottenham adding to concerns about their difficult start.
Valencia admits Manchester United are far from title contention
Manchester United have won only once in the Premier League this season, beating Ipswich Town 5-2.
Their struggles have extended to domestic cup competitions, with a 3-2 defeat against Brighton ending their EFL Cup campaign.
Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS, Valencia acknowledged that United remain some distance from challenging for the league title.
“I share their feelings and I really feel for the supporters, but we have to be realistic,” he said.
Valencia believes several rivals have started the season considerably better and suggested United's ambitions may need to focus on longer-term progress.
Despite the disappointing results, the Ecuadorian remains hopeful that his former club can recover under Carrick.
Former United captain praises Carrick's leadership
Carrick's position has come under scrutiny following United's poor start, with former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte linked with a potential move to Old Trafford.
However, Valencia believes his former teammate possesses the qualities required to succeed as United manager.
He recalled Carrick studying for his coaching qualifications during their playing days and described him as an intelligent, respectful leader.
Valencia also rejected suggestions that Carrick lacked a longstanding ambition to become a manager.
The former defender has attended three United matches since Carrick took charge and believes his personality remains unchanged.
He praised the manager's calm approach to communication and his ability to handle pressure during press conferences.
Although Valencia recognises United's current limitations, he remains convinced Carrick has the temperament and football knowledge to lead the club through a difficult period.
