Alexis Mac Allister clears up Liverpool contract comments after Anfield concern

Alexis Mac Allister has clarified his recent comments about his Liverpool contract, insisting his disappointment was an emotional reaction rather than criticism of the club.

The Argentina international attracted attention earlier this month after admitting he was “very, very sad” not to have received a new contract offer, particularly after Liverpool opened discussions with midfield teammates Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Mac Allister has two years remaining on his current deal and has now attempted to calm speculation surrounding his future.

Speaking to ESPN Argentina, Mac Allister stressed that Liverpool have not made a final decision about his long-term future.

He also explained why his initial comments sounded particularly emotional.

“In that press conference, because they were asking me a bit about my future, it just came from within,” Mac Allister said.

“It was more about my emotions than judging the club or anything like that. In the end, they’re the ones who handle these things and make the decisions, and that’s absolutely fine with me.”

The midfielder was therefore disappointed by the situation but does not want those feelings interpreted as an attack on Liverpool or the club’s hierarchy.

Mac Allister’s clarification does not mean the underlying contract question has disappeared.

With two years remaining on his deal, Liverpool still have time to determine whether they want to extend his stay at Anfield.

The 27-year-old has made it clear that remaining beyond his existing contract would appeal to him, although he is also prepared to accept whatever decision Liverpool eventually make.

“Hopefully it’ll be for more years, but if it’s two, that’s absolutely fine,” he said. “I’ll enjoy it, enjoy it with my family. Because I have no doubt it’s one of the best clubs in the world.”

For now, Mac Allister appears determined to separate his football from the negotiations. His preference to stay is clear, but the next significant move belongs to Liverpool.

Liverpool have time to decide whether opening extension talks with Mac Allister fits their long-term plans, with no final decision currently communicated.

Mac Allister will meanwhile concentrate on his football under Andoni Iraola, knowing he would welcome a longer stay but is prepared to respect whatever Liverpool decide.
