Alan Shearer calls for patience as Matthias Jaissle rebuild takes shape at Newcastle

Alan Shearer believes Newcastle United supporters may need patience this season as Matthias Jaissle attempts to develop one of the Premier League’s youngest and most heavily changed squads.

Jaissle replaced Eddie Howe in July and inherited a Newcastle side transformed during the summer, with players including Bazoumana Touré, Lukas Horníček and Sean Steur arriving at St James’ Park.

The Magpies have experienced some early inconsistency, but their 2-1 victory over Hull City ensured they entered the international break in the top half after losing only once in their opening five league matches.

Speaking to Sky Sports News at an event raising funds for the Alan Shearer Foundation, the Newcastle legend suggested supporters should expect fluctuations while Jaissle and his new players adapt.

“I think because of how young he is, because of how young the squad is and the huge turnover, I think it will be an up and down season,” Shearer said.

“There are going to be times where we are going to have to be patient.”

Newcastle's last two matches demonstrated exactly what Shearer means.

Their 4-1 defeat at Leeds was a significant setback, but Jaissle received a much better response against Hull despite having nine players unavailable.

Lewis Hall and Joe Willock gave Newcastle a two-goal advantage inside ten minutes before Yoane Wissa missed the opportunity to make it three from the penalty spot.

Hull responded through Mohamed-Ali Cho after the break, forcing Newcastle's inexperienced side to withstand considerable late pressure before securing the points.

Shearer was impressed by that response but believes Jaissle still needs time to understand exactly what he has available.

“A lot of them are so young and they’re coming into a league where they haven’t played before,” he explained.

Shearer also suggested Newcastle's rebuild may eventually require further additions, either in January or next summer.

For now, he described the opening weeks as a “solid start”.

That assessment reflects Newcastle’s situation well. There have already been difficult moments, particularly at Leeds, but Jaissle is integrating numerous young players while also dealing with significant injury problems.

The international break should provide Newcastle with an opportunity to recover several important players, with Nico Gonzalez, Dan Burn, Joelinton and Jacob Ramsey among those potentially returning against Coventry.

Jaissle will hope greater availability provides some stability as Newcastle attempt to build on what Shearer believes has been an encouraging enough start to a major rebuild.
