Fabian Hürzeler sets Brighton bigger challenge after statement Arsenal victory

Fabian Hürzeler believes Brighton’s impressive victory over Arsenal will only become truly significant if his side can reproduce that level consistently against the rest of the Premier League.

Brighton overwhelmed the reigning champions with their aggressive approach, with Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber later describing his team’s performance as “unacceptable”.

Speaking to talkSPORT during the international break, Hürzeler used the result to explain Brighton’s ambition to “challenge the establishment” rather than simply celebrating another major scalp.

Hürzeler stopped short of describing Brighton’s performance against Arsenal as perfect, insisting there remains room for improvement.

Instead, his focus was on making performances of that standard routine.

“Our challenge will be now that we make these kind of exceptional performances normal,” Hürzeler said.

“We have this phrase, we want to challenge the establishment.”

Arsenal clearly fall into the group Brighton are attempting to compete with, particularly after winning the Premier League last season.

However, Hürzeler stressed that beating established elite clubs in individual matches is not enough.

“Challenging the establishment doesn't mean to challenge them in one-to-one games,” he explained. “You have to challenge them when you're not playing against them.”

For Brighton, that means producing the same intensity and consistency against opponents throughout the league rather than reserving their strongest displays for marquee fixtures.

Brighton deserved credit for how effectively they disrupted Arsenal, but the Gunners also had opportunities to change the match.

Bukayo Saka twice reached dangerous positions inside the penalty area, while Bruno Guimaraes fired into the side-netting and Christos Tzolis was unable to capitalise after being played through.

Arsenal also wasted a promising counter-attack immediately before Brighton scored their second goal.

That context does not diminish Brighton’s performance, but it demonstrates why Hürzeler is reluctant to treat one victory as proof his side have permanently closed the gap to the Premier League’s established clubs.

His target is considerably more demanding: making performances like the one against Arsenal the expectation rather than the exception.

Brighton’s challenge after the international break will be demonstrating that the Arsenal victory represents more than another impressive result against elite opposition.

For Hürzeler, genuine progress will be measured by whether Brighton can reproduce the same intensity, movement and execution consistently across the Premier League.
