Newcastle Step Up Pursuit of Wissa

Newcastle United have now formalised their interest in Yoane Wissa, tabling a £35m plus add-ons bid to Brentford, according to Ben Jacobs. The 28-year-old has already made clear he is keen on the switch to St James’ Park, with the lure of Champions League football and a top-six project proving decisive.

Brentford, however, are weighing their stance carefully. After already losing Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Nørgaard earlier this summer, the Bees face another test of their ability to retain key players amid mounting interest.

The timing is significant. Just days ago, new head coach Keith Andrews confirmed Wissa’s absence from Brentford’s 3–1 defeat to Nottingham Forest was down to him not being “in the right head space” to play.

Andrews Admits Uncertainty

Speaking after the Forest defeat on 17 August, Andrews accepted that the Wissa saga cannot be allowed to drag on for much longer.

Keith Andrews on Wissa’s Situation:

“It’s a day-by-day one in terms of Wiss. As far as I know nothing else has happened today, definitely didn’t yesterday, so as it was really. I have no idea what the situation will be… Hopefully it can resolve itself sooner rather than later.” — Keith Andrews, via Brentford press conference

The Irishman confirmed further talks will be held with the forward in the coming days, stressing the need for clarity both for Wissa and for the wider squad.

Wissa has been a consistent outlet in attack since arriving from Lorient, delivering a combined 48 goal contributions across 133 appearances. His work rate, versatility, and eye for goal make him a prime candidate for Newcastle’s evolving frontline.

Analyst Verdict

From a tactical perspective, Wissa would add pressing intensity and direct running to Eddie Howe’s attack, complementing Alexander Isak while offering cover in wide areas. Newcastle’s reliance on Isak and Callum Wilson has left them exposed to injuries, so securing Wissa could add depth and balance.

Brentford, though, risk a major attacking rebuild if they cash in. Losing three core starters in one window would pile pressure on Keith Andrews just as he begins his tenure, potentially leaving the Bees short in creativity and firepower.

Key Insights

  • Newcastle bid £35m + add-ons for Yoane Wissa.
  • Player has told Magpies he wants the move.
  • Brentford boss Keith Andrews admits uncertainty can’t continue.
  • Bees already lost Mbeumo and Nørgaard this summer.
  • Wissa’s stats underline consistent Premier League output.

What’s Next

The coming days will be decisive. Newcastle are confident of striking a deal before the window closes, but Brentford’s stance will hinge on whether they can line up adequate reinforcements.

For Wissa, personal terms with Newcastle are not expected to be an issue. Should Brentford relent, he could quickly become the next arrival on Tyneside.

Should Brentford cash in on Wissa now — or fight to keep their last attacking pillar?

Im not quite sure if this is true but I think he's on a 9K pond per week, thats way to low.. Despite that I think this is more to what Brentford wants so probably a deal that go's through
