Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has warned his former club that January reinforcements are essential if they are to mount a serious push for Champions League qualification this season.

United secured a narrow 1-0 Boxing Day victory over Newcastle United despite the absence of Bruno Fernandes, but Rooney believes the result masked deeper structural issues — particularly a lack of depth available to head coach Ruben Amorim.

Rooney alarmed by United’s thin squad

United’s matchday bench against Newcastle raised eyebrows, with five academy players — Bendito Mantato, Jack Fletcher, Shea Lacey, Tyler Fletcher and Tyler Fredricson — named among the substitutes. Only Altay Bayındır, Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee and Tyrell Malacia offered genuine first-team experience.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Rooney did not hold back.

“When I look at the squad and the bench, what they’ve got there, they really need players in to try to help them challenge to get into the top four,” Rooney said.

“It’s great to see the young players on the bench and getting opportunities, but it needs to be at the right time — and it’s not. It’s not sustainable at all.

“They need players in. They’ve obviously lost some important players, and Bruno is a big loss.”

Injuries and AFCON absences bite hard

Amorim’s options have been severely restricted. Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt and Kobbie Mainoo are all sidelined, while Mason Mount was forced off at half-time against Newcastle.

Further complications come from the Africa Cup of Nations, with Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui all unavailable until mid-January, when the tournament concludes on 18 January.

The result is a squad stretched to its limits — a situation Rooney believes is incompatible with top-four ambitions.

Performance raised red flags

Despite keeping a clean sheet, Rooney admitted he was unconvinced by United’s display.

“I was worried when I saw the performance, if I’m honest,” he said.

“The manager changed the formation and went with a back four, which a lot of people have been asking for. I know they didn’t concede a goal, but they didn’t look comfortable. Newcastle were putting them under pressure, especially in the second half.”

United finished the match with just 33 per cent possession at Old Trafford, a statistic Rooney felt was jarring for supporters.

“When fans go to that stadium, they want to see the team with the ball, entertaining, getting crosses in and getting shots away. It was a poor performance, but they found a way to win.”

Amorim: ‘We had to suffer together’

Ruben Amorim echoed some of Rooney’s concerns in his post-match assessment, admitting the performance was far from ideal.

“We played two games in one,” Amorim said. “We had to suffer, all together, in the stadium and in the game. It was really difficult.

“We did good in the first half, but in the second half we just defended and tried to do something with transitions. It was a good win.

“I had so many games here where we played really well and didn’t get the three points. Today was the opposite.”

January window now crucial

The January transfer window opens on Thursday, 1 January, and closes on 2 February — a period Rooney believes could define United’s season.

With squad depth stretched, creativity reduced and injuries mounting, pressure is building on the club’s recruitment team to act decisively.

What’s next?

United face a critical run of fixtures as the January window opens. Whether the club backs Amorim with reinforcements could determine if this season becomes one of recovery — or another missed opportunity.
