Virgil van Dijk criticised after Netherlands penalty decision explained

Virgil van Dijk has come under heavy criticism following the Netherlands' World Cup exit after it emerged the captain chose not to take a penalty during the shootout defeat to Morocco.

The Oranje were eliminated in the Round of 32 after Quinten Timber, Justin Kluivert and Crysencio Summerville all failed to convert from the spot, ending Ronald Koeman's side's hopes of progressing further in the tournament.

Following the defeat, questions quickly turned to Van Dijk's absence from the first five penalty takers, with conflicting explanations emerging over the Liverpool defender's decision.

Speaking on De Telegraaf's Kick-off podcast, journalist Mike Verweij questioned why the Netherlands captain did not step forward during the shootout.

Verweij argued that Van Dijk, as the team's most experienced player, should have accepted the responsibility.

"The biggest issue is that he didn't take responsibility during the penalty shootout. If you're the leader, with that much experience, you don't leave someone like Summerville to take a penalty."

He also referenced Van Dijk's missed penalty against Argentina at the 2022 World Cup but insisted that should not have prevented him from volunteering again.

"Four years ago he missed in Qatar, but in a moment like this you simply have to step forward."

After the match, Van Dijk reportedly stated that the order of penalty takers had been decided by head coach Ronald Koeman.

However, Verweij claimed a different explanation later emerged.

According to fellow journalist Valentijn Driessen, those present after Koeman's press conference were told Van Dijk had withdrawn because he was not feeling fully fit.

Driessen questioned that reasoning.

"We were told he gave up his penalty because he wasn't feeling completely well. Summerville had cramp, but he still took one. He didn't run away from the responsibility."

The journalist concluded that a captain should always be among the first players selected to take penalties.

"As captain, you simply have to be one of the first five."

The penalty shootout overshadowed what had already been a disappointing evening for the Netherlands, who struggled throughout the knockout tie before eventually falling short from 12 yards.

Having followed the Dutch national team throughout the tournament, Van Dijk's leadership has rarely been questioned. However, penalty shootouts often place captains under greater scrutiny than any other moment in football. Until Van Dijk or Koeman provide a detailed explanation, it remains difficult to establish exactly why the Liverpool defender was absent from the list of takers.

The Netherlands will now begin analysing another disappointing World Cup campaign, with scrutiny likely to remain on both Koeman's tactical decisions and the penalty shootout. Attention may also turn to Van Dijk, who could face further questions if he addresses the controversy publicly in the coming days.
