Virgil van Dijk has thrown his full support behind new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola while also welcoming the club's imminent signing of Barcelona defender Ronald Araújo.
The Liverpool captain made his first pre-season appearance in Sunday's 3-2 defeat to Monaco at Anfield, playing just under an hour as the Reds surrendered a two-goal lead. Despite the result, Van Dijk focused on the club's ongoing transition following Arne Slot's departure and the new additions expected before the transfer window closes.
Van Dijk welcomes defensive reinforcements
Araújo is expected to complete his move from Barcelona in the coming days, providing Iraola with another senior centre-back after injuries to Jérémy Jacquet, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni.
Van Dijk said any new arrival would receive a warm welcome.
"Any player that arrives at the club we will be welcoming. I have no idea if it has been announced or not. I have not seen him so let's see."
The Dutch defender also offered an encouraging update on Jacquet, who is nearing a return after injury.
"I've spoken to him. I've seen him walking around and we have conversations. I can't wait to see him back on the pitch. I have a feeling this week he could be back on the pitch."
Liverpool are also expected to remain active in the market, with Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola among the club's attacking targets.
Full backing for Iraola
Van Dijk admitted Liverpool are entering a new era following Slot's dismissal but revealed he has already built a positive relationship with Iraola.
The 34-year-old explained he has offered his support to the Spaniard as the squad adapts to different training methods and preparations.
"We had a great conversation in the first week when it got announced and the main thing for him to know is I am here for him regardless."
He also paid tribute to his former manager while expressing confidence in Liverpool's new direction.
"I liked working under Arne and I am sure I will like working under the new manager."
