Newcastle United close in on Pierre-Emile Højbjerg transfer

Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Marseille midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, with reports suggesting an agreement between the clubs is now within reach.

The Magpies stepped up their pursuit after identifying the Denmark international as a priority midfield target, and negotiations have accelerated following Bruno Guimarães' move to Arsenal earlier this summer.

According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, Newcastle are prepared to meet Marseille's €15 million asking price, while journalist Santi Aouna reports the Premier League club hope to complete the transfer before the end of the week.

Marseille are understood to be open to Højbjerg's departure as they look to improve their financial position.

The Ligue 1 side are aiming to raise funds while reducing their wage bill, making the experienced midfielder one of the players available this summer. Although his contract runs until 2028, Højbjerg has reportedly decided he wants to leave the French club.

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson has been leading discussions, with previous reports indicating the 31-year-old has already approved a return to the Premier League.

Højbjerg has attracted interest from Serie A clubs Atalanta and AC Milan during the transfer window, but Newcastle now appear to be leading the race.
