Víctor Muñoz explains Liverpool transfer after Newcastle United twist

Víctor Muñoz has explained why he chose Liverpool over Newcastle United after a dramatic transfer saga, while also providing an update on the injury that has delayed his FIFA World Cup debut with Spain.

The 22-year-old winger appeared destined for St James' Park for much of the past week, with reports in Spain suggesting Newcastle had reached an agreement with both Osasuna and the player. However, Liverpool ultimately secured his signature after making a late move, with the opportunity to work under Andoni Iraola proving decisive.

Speaking to Cadena SER after completing his transfer, Muñoz admitted the Liverpool head coach played a major part in shaping his decision.

Muñoz revealed that conversations with Iraola quickly made it clear where he wanted his future to be.

"He transmitted his confidence to me, the way his team plays… he played an important role in my decision."

The Spain international also admitted the transfer developed at remarkable speed.

"It all happened very quickly."

the club's pursuit reflects their desire to recruit young players capable of fitting Iraola's high-intensity style. While Newcastle appeared favourites at one stage, Liverpool's late intervention proved enough to change the direction of the deal.

However, it remains too early to judge how quickly Muñoz will establish himself in the Premier League, particularly with his current injury concerns.

Away from the transfer, Muñoz also addressed the muscular injury that has disrupted the start of his World Cup campaign.

Although his recovery initially progressed well, he admitted he has suffered another setback.

"We were managing the injury, but I felt some discomfort again and we're trying to restart the process so I can get back on the pitch as soon as possible."

The frustration has been difficult to deal with.

"These have been very difficult moments because this is a childhood dream and seeing it threatened by an injury is incredibly frustrating."

Muñoz praised the support he has received inside Spain's training camp throughout his rehabilitation.

"My team-mates have been a fundamental pillar in making sure I wake up motivated every day."

He also thanked Spain psychologist Javier López Vallejo for helping him cope mentally with the setback.

"Both before coming here and since we've been here, I've had my conversations with Javi. He helps me a great deal. He helps me see another perspective on everything that's happening here. It's a pleasure to have him."

Before turning his attention to Liverpool, Muñoz reflected warmly on his breakthrough campaign at Osasuna, where his performances attracted Premier League interest.

"It's an incredible place. I'll always keep it in my heart. They gave me the best footballing year of my career."

The winger also admitted he deliberately blocked out the growing transfer speculation while Spain prepared for the tournament.

"I've been focused on the World Cup. I didn't want to hear much about my future unless it was something concrete."

Spanish reports suggest Muñoz could return during the knockout stages if Spain continue their progress, although no official timeframe has yet been confirmed.

For now, that remains his only objective.

"It's the only thing I'm thinking about. It's a dream and I want to be back on the pitch as soon as possible."

Liverpool have secured one of Spain's most promising young wide players, but patience may be required before supporters see him in action. The immediate priority is ensuring Muñoz completes his rehabilitation without further setbacks, allowing him to begin pre-season fully fit.

Based on the final weeks of Osasuna's campaign, his direct running and work rate made him one of La Liga's emerging talents, qualities that fit naturally into Iraola's demanding tactical approach.

Spain remain hopeful Muñoz will recover in time to feature later in the World Cup should they progress through the knockout stages. Liverpool's medical staff will also monitor his rehabilitation closely before he joins up with his new teammates ahead of the 2026/27 season. While optimism remains, his return will ultimately depend on how his recovery responds over the coming days.
