Trevan Sanusi Newcastle starlet sets Real Madrid and Barcelona ambition

Trevan Sanusi Newcastle career is only just beginning, but the teenager has already set his sights on Europe’s very top clubs. Speaking to Le Télégramme after completing a season-long loan to FC Lorient, the 18-year-old winger admitted his ambition is to one day play for Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Sanusi joined Newcastle from Birmingham City in 2023, impressing quickly in the academy setup. Eddie Howe handed him his senior debut in January’s FA Cup win over Bromley — his only first-team appearance so far. The club sanctioned a deadline-day move to Lorient this summer, believing regular Ligue 1 minutes will accelerate his development.

“It’s a big new step to take, for sure,” Sanusi said. “But I’m used to being outplayed and pushed upwards since my youth. I feel ready to take on the challenge of Ligue 1. It’s a very physical league, and I know it’s an aspect of my game I still need to improve. But it’s also the league of talents, and that’s in line with what I want to show on the pitch.”

The winger confessed he wasn’t deeply familiar with Lorient before the move, but was aware of the club through former forward Yoane Wissa — who recently signed for Newcastle after three seasons at Brentford.

“Lorient was on my list of possible destinations. I didn’t really know the club’s history, but I knew that Yoane Wissa played there. He’s a great player, and I’m all the more excited to have this opportunity to experience Ligue 1,” Sanusi explained.

For Newcastle, the logic is clear: regular minutes in a competitive league could prepare Sanusi to return as a first-team option in 2026.

FootballPlace analyst John William believes Sanusi’s ambitions reflect a generational mindset:

“Today’s top teenagers don’t think in limits. Sanusi knows Newcastle is a platform, but he wants the very top. The Madrid and Barcelona quotes will raise eyebrows, but they also show confidence. If he thrives in Ligue 1, the hype will only grow.”

William added: “For Newcastle, this is a win-win. Either Sanusi develops into a first-team option or they eventually sell him for a profit. His ceiling is high, but Ligue 1 will be the reality check.”

Sanusi is expected to compete immediately for minutes at Lorient, who see him as a key attacking reinforcement. Ligue 1’s physicality will test him, but also develop the aspects of his game he admits still need work.

For Newcastle, the hope is that Sanusi returns sharper, stronger, and closer to first-team level. But with the teenager openly talking about Barcelona and Madrid, the club may need to work hard to convince him his long-term future lies at St James’ Park.
