Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed they will not appoint a new sporting director before the end of the summer transfer window, instead placing their trust in the club's existing recruitment structure during a crucial period.
Spurs have been searching for a replacement since Fabio Paratici departed in February to return to Italy with Fiorentina for family reasons. Several high-profile names have since been linked with the vacancy, including former Borussia Dortmund executive Sebastian Kehl.
However, the club have now made a significant decision regarding their recruitment setup.
Tottenham put search on hold
The update emerged through minutes from a recent Fan Advisory Board meeting, where chief executive Vinai Venkatesham addressed supporters' questions regarding the club's leadership structure.
Venkatesham confirmed that recruiting a new sporting director is no longer an immediate priority and that Tottenham will continue operating with their current football leadership team throughout the transfer window.
Responsibility for recruitment will be shared between sporting director Johan Lange, head coach Roberto De Zerbi and director of football operations Rafi Moersen.
"The club has confidence in our people, but if we find someone who can complement our existing team and make it better, we will do that at the right time (and in a summer window is not that time)," Venkatesham explained.
He also dismissed suggestions that Tottenham had failed to land preferred candidates.
"No one has been in a process and turned us down. Many names in the media linked with us, we have never even spoken to."
Lange receives strong backing
The decision is particularly notable given the scrutiny surrounding Johan Lange's role.
Tottenham are entering what many view as a pivotal transfer window following successive 17th-place Premier League finishes, and recruitment has become a major talking point among supporters.
Despite criticism aimed at the club's transfer strategy in recent years, Venkatesham offered a strong defence of Lange and the collaborative structure currently in place.
"Players are not bought or sold because 'the club' wants to or 'Roberto' wants to."
The chief executive stressed that recruitment decisions are made jointly, with Lange and his department working closely alongside De Zerbi to identify targets and build the squad.
De Zerbi central to summer plans
Venkatesham also highlighted the role De Zerbi has played since arriving at the club.
According to the chief executive, the Italian coach never requested greater control over transfer decisions and remained committed to the project regardless of Tottenham's league position.
The club also revealed that Lange played a major role in De Zerbi's appointment.
"Roberto was always the number one choice, and we are delighted with the impact he has made so far."
That statement reinforces Tottenham's intention to continue with their current structure rather than making a major executive appointment during one of the most important transfer windows in recent club history.
