Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has taken his struggling squad to Marbella for a training camp as Spurs attempt to escape the Premier League relegation zone.
With Tottenham sitting 19th in the table, the Italian is hoping to rebuild confidence and improve team unity through an approach that previously delivered positive results at Marseille.
Roberto De Zerbi turns to successful Marseille training camp strategy
De Zerbi has previously used squad retreats to reverse difficult periods, most notably during his time in charge of Marseille.
In November 2024, he organised a four-day training camp in Mallemort after a disappointing run of results and growing tensions within the squad.
Players shared rooms, participated in group activities and worked on strengthening relationships away from the pressures of competitive football.
Marseille subsequently collected ten points from their next four Ligue 1 matches, winning three and drawing one.
The experience proved so popular that captain Leonardo Balerdi later organised another squad trip to Copenhagen without the coaching staff.
De Zerbi repeated the strategy in April 2025, taking Marseille to Rome following five defeats in seven league matches.
The French side responded by going unbeaten in their final four fixtures, securing second place and Champions League qualification.
After a decisive victory over Le Havre, Marseille's players celebrated by lifting De Zerbi into the air while chanting "Roma, Roma!"
Tottenham seek similar response amid relegation concerns
De Zerbi also experimented with training camps during his spell at Brighton.
A December 2022 trip to Dubai was followed by three victories in four Premier League matches, including an impressive 3-0 win over Liverpool.
Brighton eventually finished sixth that season, qualifying for European competition for the first time.
However, a second Dubai camp in January 2024 produced less encouraging results, demonstrating that the approach does not guarantee improvement.
Tottenham's current situation presents a significant challenge, with the club struggling for results under De Zerbi.
The Marbella retreat is designed to improve communication, strengthen relationships and help players regain confidence.
Although previous experiences offer encouragement, Spurs must translate any improvements in team spirit into performances on the pitch.
For De Zerbi, the immediate priority is finding the consistency needed to move Tottenham away from the relegation places.
