Tottenham Hotspur avoided fresh injury problems during Monday night’s frustrating 1-1 draw against Leeds United, but Roberto De Zerbi still faces a major availability crisis heading into the final weeks of the season.

Spurs missed a huge opportunity to move further away from the relegation zone after throwing away the lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving them only two points clear of West Ham United.

With difficult fixtures still remaining — including a trip to Chelsea — Tottenham continue to battle through one of the Premier League’s worst injury lists.

Xavi Simons facing lengthy recovery

Xavi Simons remains one of Tottenham’s biggest absentees after suffering a devastating ACL rupture shortly after Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival.

The attacking midfielder initially attempted to continue playing after the injury against Wolverhampton Wanderers but was later forced off before scans confirmed the seriousness of the damage.

The injury will rule Simons out of this summer’s World Cup and likely the opening months of next season.

In an emotional social media message after surgery, Simons admitted he was “heartbroken” by the setback.

Potential return date: Winter 2026

Solanke pushing to return against Chelsea

There is more encouraging news surrounding Dominic Solanke.

The striker suffered a hamstring injury against Wolves that initially appeared likely to end his season.

However, De Zerbi has since suggested Solanke’s recovery is progressing faster than expected. “About Solanke, he's improving very quickly. We hope for the next game in Stamford Bridge.”

Having followed Tottenham’s recent attacking struggles closely, Solanke’s possible return would provide a major boost during the final stages of the survival battle.

Potential return date: Chelsea vs Tottenham — 19 May 2026

Vicario still working back to fitness

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario continues recovering after undergoing hernia surgery during the April international break.

Although Tottenham originally hoped the operation would have minimal impact on his availability, the Italian has now missed five consecutive matches.

De Zerbi recently reaffirmed his belief in Vicario’s importance to the team. “Vicario is still the first goalkeeper at Tottenham.”

However, the manager also admitted the goalkeeper’s physical condition and lack of recent match rhythm must be carefully managed.

Potential return date: Unknown

Romero, Kudus and Kulusevski still unavailable

Cristian Romero remains sidelined with the serious knee injury suffered during De Zerbi’s first match in charge.

The Argentine defender is unlikely to play again this season, although there remains hope he could recover in time for the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Kudus’s hamstring problem continues to cause complications after a setback earlier in rehabilitation.

There is still uncertainty over whether surgery will be required.

The most frustrating situation perhaps surrounds Dejan Kulusevski, who has not featured at all this season while battling a persistent knee issue that has already required multiple surgeries.

De Zerbi recently admitted it is difficult to imagine the Sweden international making the World Cup without any competitive football before the tournament.

Odobert and Davies unlikely to return soon

Young winger Wilson Odobert remains in long-term rehabilitation after suffering an ACL injury in February.

Defender Ben Davies is also expected to miss the rest of the campaign while recovering from a broken ankle.

With Davies out of contract this summer, there is growing belief he may already have played his final match for Spurs.

What’s next?

Tottenham now face a hugely important trip to Chelsea knowing their Premier League survival is still not secure.

De Zerbi will hope Solanke can recover in time to strengthen an injury-hit squad desperately lacking depth and experience.

With the relegation battle tightening, Spurs can no longer afford many more setbacks.

Can Tottenham survive their injury crisis and avoid relegation under Roberto De Zerbi?
