Brighton & Hove Albion have reportedly entered advanced negotiations with Cruzeiro EC over the sale of defender Igor Julio.
After weeks of speculation surrounding the Brazilian’s future, discussions have now moved into a formal stage with Cruzeiro submitting an official proposal to Brighton.
The deal is increasingly viewed as achievable, with the structure of payments now emerging as the key issue between the two clubs.
Cruzeiro submit official offer
According to reports from Brazil, Brighton are seeking around £5.1 million (€6m) to part ways with the centre-back this summer.
Cruzeiro’s initial bid reportedly falls slightly below that valuation, although the difference is considered relatively small.
Negotiations are now described internally as “well advanced”.
Having followed the situation closely in recent months, the expectation in Brazil increasingly appears to be that an agreement will eventually be reached.
The biggest challenge now involves how the transfer fee will be paid rather than the overall valuation itself.
Igor Julio now priority defensive target
Cruzeiro manager Artur Jorge is believed to have personally prioritised Igor Julio as a key defensive reinforcement ahead of the second half of the Brazilian season.
The club are also discussing a proposed four-year contract with the player.
Despite attracting interest from clubs in Italy, Germany and elsewhere in England, Cruzeiro have moved ahead of rival suitors by turning long-standing interest into concrete negotiations.
Igor Julio is also reportedly open to returning to Brazil at this stage of his career.
Brighton exit increasingly expected
The defender’s future at Brighton has looked uncertain for several months.
After struggling for regular opportunities at the Amex Stadium, Igor Julio spent part of the season on loan at West Ham United FC.
However, that spell failed to significantly improve his situation.
The Brazilian made only four appearances for West Ham between September 2025 and January 2026 before returning to Brighton, where he has since featured just once more.
That limited involvement has strengthened expectations that Brighton would be willing to sanction a permanent departure this summer.
Financial flexibility shaping negotiations
Cruzeiro’s ability to structure the payments effectively could now determine whether the transfer is completed quickly.
Reports in Brazil suggest the club have been actively working behind the scenes to secure the financial resources necessary to finalise the deal.
For Brighton, a sale would help streamline defensive options ahead of the next transfer window while recovering part of the investment made in the player.
However, it remains unclear whether Brighton will insist on immediate guarantees before approving the transfer.
What’s next?
Talks between Brighton and Cruzeiro are expected to continue over the coming days as both clubs work to finalise the financial structure of the agreement.
With confidence growing in Brazil, Igor Julio’s return home now appears increasingly likely.
For Brighton, the move could represent another step in reshaping the squad ahead of next season.
Should Brighton cash in on Igor Julio this summer?
