Tottenham injury latest: Savio and Maddison could return against Forest

Tottenham could receive two important injury boosts ahead of their trip to Nottingham Forest, with Savio and James Maddison both potentially available for Roberto De Zerbi.

Spurs' difficult start continued with a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United, but there were at least positives on the fitness front as Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro and Mohammed Kudus returned.

De Zerbi is now hoping Savio and Maddison can follow them back into contention for Friday's visit to the City Ground, while Dejan Kulusevski continues his long recovery.

Savio was the major surprise omission against Newcastle after being expected to make his first Premier League start following his £75million move from Manchester City.

The Brazilian had produced an impressive goalscoring debut against Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup but subsequently experienced muscular fatigue.

Tottenham's medical staff did not want to risk him against Newcastle, a decision De Zerbi supported.

The issue is not currently considered serious, and Spurs hope Savio will recover in time to face Nottingham Forest on September 5.

Maddison has missed Tottenham's last two matches after suffering a shoulder fracture during the opening Premier League defeat against Brentford.

Kulusevski's recovery remains a considerably longer-term situation.

De Zerbi has praised the 26-year-old's work during his rehabilitation and hopes to eventually restore him to the squad.

“He's improving day by day,” De Zerbi said. “He suffered too much for his career, for his age.”

Xavi Simons remains sidelined after rupturing his ACL against Wolves towards the end of last season.

The Netherlands international has not played since April and faces several more months of rehabilitation.
