Chelsea have been handed a timely injury boost as Tosin Adarabioyo is expected to return to training in the coming days after missing Sunday’s goalless draw against Crystal Palace. The 26-year-old summer signing was withdrawn from the matchday squad after suffering what Enzo Maresca described as a “physical problem.”

Standard Sport reports that the issue is “very minor,” with sources close to the situation stressing the defender was left out as a precaution after failing to complete Saturday’s training session. His fitness will continue to be monitored, but the early signs are positive.

The development comes at a crucial time for Maresca’s side, who face West Ham at the London Stadium on Friday night. With Chelsea seeking their first win of the Premier League season, the return of Tosin could prove a defensive boost in a tricky London derby.

Why Chelsea Will Welcome Tosin’s Return

Chelsea’s back line already looks stretched, with Wesley Fofana still working his way back and Trevoh Chalobah linked with a late-window exit. Tosin was recruited from Fulham to add height, composure, and aerial presence, and his absence against Palace left Maresca short of options.

His potential return to training this week will ease concerns, though there remains doubt over whether he will be match-ready in time to face West Ham. Given the physicality of Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen, Maresca may be tempted to ease Tosin back rather than rush him.

Speaking after the stalemate at Selhurst Park, Maresca admitted uncertainty over Tosin’s recovery time.

“He had a physical problem. We don’t know for how long [he will be out].” — Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager

Chelsea insiders, however, have stressed the defender should not be sidelined for long.

Tosin’s 2024/25 campaign has been quietly impressive: 43 appearances across competitions, 20 clean sheets, and only 25 goals conceded. In the Premier League, he ranked in the 97th percentile for goals conceded per 90 (0.77) and 98th percentile for clean sheets (41%), underlining his defensive value.

Analyst Verdict

This is a relief for Chelsea. In Maresca’s system, which relies on defenders stepping into midfield with confidence, Tosin’s composure and distribution are vital. Without him, Chelsea were less fluid playing out from the back against Palace.

From observing his Fulham performances, Tosin has developed into a defender who rarely panics under pressure. His timing in aerial duels could be crucial against West Ham, but the bigger question is whether Chelsea risk him so soon after a precautionary withdrawal.

Key Insights

  • Tosin Adarabioyo avoided serious injury after missing Palace match.
  • Issue described as “very minor” by sources close to Chelsea.
  • Defender set to return to training this week, fitness monitored daily.
  • Remains a doubt for West Ham clash but expected back shortly.
  • Maresca values him as a key part of Chelsea’s defensive structure.

What’s Next

Chelsea will monitor Tosin’s progress in training sessions this week before making a decision on his availability for Friday’s trip to West Ham. Even if he only makes the bench, his return would provide Maresca with much-needed depth in central defence.

If he misses out, the manager will likely continue with Chalobah and Josh Acheampong, but the long-term plan remains clear: Tosin is expected to form a central role in Chelsea’s defensive rebuild under Maresca.

Should Chelsea risk starting Tosin against West Ham — or keep him wrapped up for bigger tests ahead?
