Tiago Gabriel addresses his future after Crystal Palace and Fulham transfer interest

Tiago Gabriel has spoken about his future at Lecce after attracting interest from Crystal Palace and Fulham during the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old centre-back has developed into one of Serie A’s most promising young defenders since joining Lecce for around €1m in January 2025.

His progress attracted Premier League attention during the summer. Fulham made an approach and were competing with AC Milan for his signature, while Crystal Palace were also credited with an interest.

Despite that attention, Gabriel remained in Italy and insists he was happy with the outcome.

Speaking to Lecce’s official media, Gabriel explained that he tried not to become distracted by the transfer speculation.

The Portugal defender stressed that decisions over a potential sale ultimately belong to Lecce rather than himself.

“It’s special for me and for my family too,” Gabriel said about his relationship with Lecce.

“You can’t think about the transfer market; it’s secondary, it’s not up to me. That’s why I always had my mind on Lecce, and I’m so happy to have stayed.”

His comments suggest Gabriel is currently focused on continuing his development in Serie A rather than pushing for an immediate transfer.

However, his decision to emphasise that the transfer market is not under his control also leaves Lecce with an important role should Crystal Palace, Fulham or another interested club return.

Gabriel’s rapid development makes his situation particularly interesting.

Lecce invested only around €1m to sign the centre-back, meaning a future sale could potentially generate another significant profit for the Italian club.

That would follow a familiar recruitment model.

Lecce have previously generated substantial returns from players including Patrick Dorgu, Morten Hjulmand and Nikola Krstovic after developing them before sanctioning moves elsewhere.

Gabriel could eventually follow a similar path if his performances continue attracting interest from bigger clubs.

The defender further enhanced his growing reputation by scoring against Monza at the weekend.

Crystal Palace and Fulham therefore have reason to continue monitoring Gabriel.

At 21, he already possesses the physical profile that could attract Premier League clubs, while still having considerable room to develop technically, particularly with his distribution.

For now, though, Gabriel appears comfortable remaining with Lecce.

He also highlighted the importance of the club's supporters, praising the atmosphere they create for the team at home.

“We feel them on the pitch, and they mean a lot to us, they’re special,” Gabriel said. “All the teams that come here feel them. There’s an incredible atmosphere at home.”

The question is how long Lecce can retain one of their increasingly valuable young players if Premier League interest intensifies again.

Gabriel will continue establishing himself at Lecce while Crystal Palace, Fulham and other interested clubs can monitor his development.

With his value increasing significantly since his €1m arrival, Lecce could eventually face an important decision if Premier League clubs return with concrete offers.
