Manchester United collapse against Brighton as Carabao Cup pressure returns for Carrick

Manchester United are out of the Carabao Cup after surrendering a two-goal advantage in a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Brighton at Old Trafford.

Michael Carrick’s side appeared firmly in control after goals from Shea Lacey and Mason Mount inside the opening 10 minutes. Instead, Brighton produced a three-goal response to complete the comeback and hand United another painful early exit from the competition.

The defeat comes after United were eliminated by Grimsby Town on penalties last season and will inevitably bring further scrutiny following a difficult opening period of the campaign.

Carrick rotated his team for Brighton’s visit and handed 19-year-old Lacey a full debut.

The decision initially paid off spectacularly.

Lacey cut inside from the right before scoring after eight minutes, and United needed barely another 90 seconds to double their advantage. Mount reacted to a loose ball and volleyed beyond Jason Steele to make it 2-0.

Brighton refused to collapse, however, and gradually worked their way back into the contest.

Charalampos Kostoulas provided the breakthrough after Jaouen Hadjam’s long pass exposed Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro, reducing United’s advantage before half-time.

United’s defensive problems continued after the interval.

Pascal Gross was allowed to advance into the penalty area before finding the bottom corner past Karl Darlow, bringing Brighton level with around 25 minutes remaining.

Carrick responded by introducing Bryan Mbeumo, Kobbie Mainoo and Matheus Cunha as United attempted to regain control.

Instead, Brighton struck again.

Substitute Maxim de Cuyper scored just four minutes later to complete the turnaround and put the visitors 3-2 ahead.

Bruno Fernandes was subsequently introduced, but United could not find an equaliser as Brighton protected their advantage and secured progression.

The manner of the defeat is particularly damaging for United.

They were two goals ahead at home and seemingly in complete control, only to concede three times without reply.

Carrick has helped improve the atmosphere around United since taking charge, but the club’s early-season results have already created questions. Another premature Carabao Cup elimination adds to that pressure, particularly after significant investment in the squad during the summer.

For Brighton, it was the opposite story. They recovered from a disastrous opening 10 minutes and punished United’s defensive mistakes to secure an impressive comeback at Old Trafford.

Manchester United must quickly move beyond another disappointing cup elimination, with Carrick likely to face increased attention over how his side surrendered such a commanding position at Old Trafford.

The immediate priority will be producing a response in the Premier League. Brighton, meanwhile, progress to the next round after a comeback that demonstrated considerable resilience following their nightmare start.
