Tarik Muharemovic determined to prove himself after €40m Leeds move

Tarik Muharemovic has made clear that he joined Leeds United with something to prove after completing a €40million move from Sassuolo during the summer.

The 23-year-old established himself as one of Serie A’s impressive young defenders during the 2025/26 campaign, helping Sassuolo secure a comfortable mid-table finish while attracting interest from several English clubs.

Leeds ultimately won the race for his signature, and Muharemovic believes his five years in Italian football have prepared him for the demands of the Premier League.

Speaking to Gianluca Di Marzio, Muharemovic highlighted the tactical education he received during spells with Juventus and Sassuolo.

“Tactically, it’s the best place to grow,” he said. “Defensively, I learned so much during my time at Juve and Sassuolo.”

The Bosnia and Herzegovina international particularly credited Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini for helping his development at Juventus, while Nemanja Matic and Jay Idzes were among the players who later influenced him at Sassuolo.

Muharemovic also admitted not every stage of his development was straightforward, saying there were coaches who did not necessarily help him in the way he wanted.

That experience appears to have strengthened his determination to establish himself at Elland Road.

Juventus' earlier decision to let Muharemovic leave remains part of his journey, but the centre-back is no longer interested in dwelling on it.

“This wasn’t in my hands; they had better ideas and knew why,” he said.

“Now I’m really happy to be here, at Leeds, and in the Premier League, and not somewhere else.”

Muharemovic's message about his ambitions at Leeds was equally direct.

“I’m at Leeds United to prove who I am.”

His arrival comes during an encouraging start for Daniel Farke's side, who have collected nine points from their opening five Premier League matches and remain unbeaten.

With regular football available and Leeds beginning positively, Muharemovic now has the platform he wanted to demonstrate that his impressive Serie A campaign can translate to English football.

Muharemovic will look to establish himself as a regular at the heart of Farke's defence after the international break.

Leeds' unbeaten opening five matches provide a positive foundation, but the defender's bigger challenge will be proving he can reproduce his Serie A performances consistently in the Premier League.
