Sunderland are reportedly preparing to increase their offer for Sporting winger Geny Catamo after presenting the Mozambique international with a contract worth five times his current salary.
The Black Cats have already seen a significant proposal rejected but remain determined to bring the 25-year-old to the Premier League before the transfer window closes.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola reports that another Sunderland offer is expected this week, with the club potentially pushing the guaranteed transfer fee towards €40million (£34.7m).
Sunderland offer Catamo fivefold pay rise
Sunderland appear to have made significant progress when it comes to convincing Catamo himself.
The winger currently earns around €600,000 (£520,000) net per year at Sporting.
Sunderland are reportedly prepared to offer him approximately €3m (£2.6m) net annually, representing five times his current take-home salary.
A Bola describes the financial package as extremely difficult for Catamo to reject, while previous reports have suggested the winger is attracted by the prospect of playing in the Premier League.
The bigger obstacle remains reaching an agreement with Sporting.
New Sunderland bid expected
Sunderland have already offered €30m (£26m) guaranteed plus another €10m (£8.7m) in bonuses for Catamo.
The proposal would also have allowed Sporting to retain 10% of any future transfer fee.
Sporting rejected that package, but Sunderland are not ready to abandon negotiations.
A new proposal is expected to increase the guaranteed portion of the transfer fee, potentially taking it close to €40m.
However, Sporting could demand considerably more as the deadline approaches, with Catamo protected by a €60m (£52m) release clause.
Sporting determined to keep Catamo
Sporting's reluctance to sell is understandable given Catamo's importance to Rui Borges.
The 25-year-old is currently the manager's first-choice option on the right, with LuÃs Guilherme providing the main alternative.
Losing him late in the transfer window would therefore leave Sporting needing to find a replacement quickly.
Catamo has also started the new season impressively, starting both league matches and registering an assist in each.
Key Points
- Sunderland are reportedly offering Catamo around €3m net per year, five times his current Sporting salary.
- Their previous €30m plus €10m bonuses offer was rejected despite including a 10% future-sale clause.
- A new Sunderland bid is expected this week, potentially approaching €40m guaranteed.
- Sporting want to keep Catamo and could insist on his €60m release clause as the deadline approaches.
- Catamo is interested in playing in the Premier League, leaving an agreement between the clubs as the major obstacle.
What's Next?
Attention now turns to Sunderland's expected new proposal.
The Black Cats have made the financial benefits of the move clear to Catamo, but convincing Sporting remains considerably more difficult.
If Sunderland increase the guaranteed fee towards €40m, Sporting will have another major decision to make. For now, though, their position remains that Catamo is an important first-team player they would prefer to keep.
