Anthony Gordon explains Hansi Flick influence behind Barcelona move

Anthony Gordon has revealed that Hansi Flick's style of football was one of the main reasons behind his decision to join Barcelona, with the former Newcastle United winger already targeting goals and trophies at his new club.

Gordon has only been a Barcelona player for a few days but says he has quickly settled into his new surroundings.

The 25-year-old spoke about his move while taking part in the traditional Joan Gamper Trophy photograph alongside fellow summer signing Karim Adeyemi.

Gordon admitted the opportunity to work under Flick played a significant role in his decision.

The England international was already familiar with the German coach's philosophy and believes his own qualities are well suited to Barcelona's approach.

“I was already familiar with the manager’s philosophy, which is why I wanted to come here – because I like this style of play,” Gordon said.

Flick demands plenty from his wide players, with his wingers expected to stretch defences, attack space and contribute to the press.

Gordon's speed and directness could therefore provide Barcelona with a natural fit on the flank.

Moving from England to Spain represents a major change for the winger, but Gordon has been impressed by his welcome.

“My first week as a Barça player has been incredible,” he said.

“It’s a new city, a new country, obviously new teammates, new staff… but it’s been an incredible experience. Everyone has made me feel very welcome.”

His next major moment could come in the Joan Gamper Trophy against Al-Ahly, where Gordon is hoping to experience playing in front of the Barcelona supporters.

He has already set himself an ambitious target for the occasion.

“I hope to score a goal and win the match.”

Gordon also made clear that his ambitions extend far beyond simply establishing himself in Flick's team.

After thanking Barcelona supporters for their early backing, he promised to try to repay them through performances and silverware.

“I hope to repay you with lots of goals and lots of trophies,” Gordon said.

His comments suggest the winger has quickly bought into Barcelona's expectations as he prepares to begin the next stage of his career.

Gordon's attention now turns towards getting onto the pitch and beginning his Barcelona career.

The Joan Gamper Trophy could provide his first opportunity to play in front of his new supporters and show why Flick's system attracted him to the club.
