Newcastle United are in talks over a potential move for Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez as Matthias Jaissle continues rebuilding his midfield following the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

The Magpies have lost two major figures from their midfield this summer, with Tonali joining Tottenham Hotspur and Guimaraes completing a move to Arsenal.

Newcastle have already brought in young midfielders Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur, but they are now exploring the possibility of adding the considerably more experienced Gonzalez.

Talks over the 24-year-old are described as one of several exploratory conversations Newcastle are currently holding as they assess their options.

Newcastle hold talks over Nico Gonzalez

Gonzalez made 41 appearances for Manchester City during the 2025/26 campaign but struggled for regular Premier League starts during the second half of the season.

He started only twice in the league after January, including City's final match of the campaign when Pep Guardiola selected several fringe players.

Despite his limited opportunities, Gonzalez recently made it clear he was happy at the Etihad Stadium and wanted to remain with City.

He was involved in Sunday's Community Shield defeat against Arsenal, coming off the bench for the final 11 minutes.

Newcastle's interest could now provide him with a decision to make if discussions between the clubs progress.

Newcastle rebuilding after Tonali and Guimaraes exits

Midfield has become an obvious area of focus for Newcastle following two significant departures.

Tonali has joined Tottenham, while former captain Guimaraes moved to reigning Premier League champions Arsenal.

Newcastle have made six additions this summer, although their recruitment has largely focused on younger players. Only two of those six signings are over the age of 20.

Gonzalez would therefore represent a different type of addition.

At 24 and with experience at Barcelona, Porto and Manchester City, he could provide Jaissle with a more established option capable of immediately competing for a place in the starting XI.

Manchester City also undergoing major changes

Gonzalez joined City from Porto for €60million (£52m) in January 2025 when Guardiola's midfield options had been weakened by Rodri's ACL injury.

He quickly became important, starting nine of City's remaining 14 Premier League matches that season.

His role diminished considerably during the following campaign, although he still accumulated 41 appearances across all competitions.

The situation at City has now changed dramatically.

Guardiola has departed after a decade in charge, with Enzo Maresca replacing him, while Rodri completed his move to Barcelona on Tuesday. Bernardo Silva and John Stones also left when their contracts expired in June.

That upheaval could have an impact on City's willingness to consider allowing Gonzalez to leave.

Key Points

  • Newcastle are in talks for Gonzalez.
  • Midfield reinforcements remain a priority.
  • Tonali and Guimaraes have both departed.
  • Gonzalez wants to stay at Man City.
  • Discussions are still exploratory.

What’s next?

Newcastle will continue exploring the conditions of a possible deal with Manchester City while considering other midfield targets before the September 1 deadline.

There is no indication yet that an agreement is close, and Gonzalez's desire to remain at City could prove an important factor.

However, Newcastle's need for an established midfielder is clear after losing Tonali and Guimaraes. If City show a willingness to negotiate and Gonzalez becomes open to the move, talks could progress during the final two weeks of the window.
