Sunderland legend Gary Bennett has described the Black Cats' 2-0 home defeat to ten-man Brighton as a wake-up call for Régis Le Bris and his players.
The disappointing result left Sunderland just above the Premier League relegation zone, with a Europa League trip to Portuguese side Torreense approaching on Thursday.
Bennett criticises Sunderland's lack of creativity
Brighton took the lead through Maxim De Cuyper shortly after half-time before Pascal Struijk received a red card four minutes later.
Despite playing against ten men for the final 33 minutes, Sunderland struggled to create meaningful chances.
Jaouen Hadjam eventually sealed Brighton's victory with a late counter-attack.
Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, Bennett questioned Sunderland's attacking quality and defensive concentration.
“Brighton were excellent. It is a wake-up call,” he said.
Bennett also criticised the team's passing, decision-making and delivery into the penalty area.
He suggested too many players had performed below their usual standards, leaving Sunderland unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage.
Le Bris faces attacking questions before Torreense trip
Sunderland manager Le Bris admitted his side had not been efficient enough against Brighton.
Bennett raised particular concerns about striker Wilson Isidor, questioning both his attacking threat and the service he received.
He also acknowledged that Sunderland cannot immediately solve their problems by bringing in another forward.
Instead, Bennett believes the existing squad must find alternative ways to create chances and score goals.
The defeat highlighted problems at both ends of the pitch, with Sunderland struggling to break down Brighton while remaining vulnerable defensively.
Le Bris now faces the challenge of restoring confidence before Thursday's European fixture.
With Sunderland already close to the Premier League relegation places, improving their attacking output has become increasingly important.
