Gary Neville has revealed he wants a temporary break from covering Manchester City matches for Sky Sports while the club appeals its guilty verdict over 114 Premier League financial charges.

The former Manchester United defender made the admission after City's 3-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, arguing that the ongoing case has cast a shadow over the competition.

Neville struggles to praise City after Liverpool victory

Manchester City secured an impressive away victory after Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch received a second yellow card.

Erling Haaland, Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored as Enzo Maresca's side took advantage of their extra player.

Neville praised City's performance and named £116million midfielder Elliot Anderson his man of the match.

However, he admitted that the financial case made analysing their achievements uncomfortable.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville said he would be delighted to be removed from City assignments until the appeal process concludes.

He acknowledged that winning at Anfield deserved recognition but said the uncertainty surrounding the club made that difficult.

Manchester City appeal casts shadow over Premier League

City were found guilty last month of 114 financial charges relating to the period between 2009 and 2018.

The club maintains its innocence and has appealed the findings, with potential sanctions still unresolved.

Neville warned that the situation could have significant consequences for the Premier League if the verdict is upheld.

He described a major cloud hanging over the competition while the appeal continues.

Nevertheless, Neville stressed that City's current players, coaching staff and supporters should not be blamed for the allegations.

Jamie Carragher echoed that view, arguing that those on the pitch were facing criticism for matters beyond their control.

The appeal process remains ongoing, and no final punishment has been confirmed.
