Shim Mheuka is making a compelling case for more senior minutes at Chelsea after a blistering run of form for club and country. The 18-year-old striker has hit 10 goals and three assists in his last eight matches, turning heads at Cobham and earning regular involvement in Enzo Maresca’s first-team training sessions.

Mheuka, who recently celebrated his 18th birthday, has been a standout performer across multiple levels this season. Representing Chelsea’s U19 side in the UEFA Youth League and U21s in the Premier League 2, he’s also carried his hot streak onto the international stage. On Wednesday, he scored twice for England’s U19s in their 2–0 European Championship qualifying win over Lithuania.

“Free-scoring” forward catching Maresca’s eye

Inside Cobham, Mheuka’s progress has become a talking point. Club insiders describe him as “one of, if not the most regular” academy players invited to train with the first team — even more often than Maresca’s self-confessed favourite, 17-year-old midfielder Reggie Walsh.

The young striker’s consistency and attitude have impressed senior staff, who believe he is closing in on a sustained first-team role. He already has six senior appearances for Chelsea, including 20 minutes off the bench in September’s 2–1 Carabao Cup win over Lincoln City, and a Premier League debut earlier this year in the 4–0 win over Southampton.

“I felt like I could go onto the Stamford Bridge pitch with zero hours of sleep and still be energised and ready for a game,” Mheuka said after his debut. “I’d played it out in my head many times. Everything was how I imagined it to be.”

Chelsea’s next great academy prospect?

The teenager’s explosive form has put him at the forefront of a new wave of academy talent pushing for senior recognition under Maresca. With Chelsea continuing to balance development and competition for places in attack, Mheuka’s adaptability and poise in front of goal are making him increasingly difficult to overlook.

Our View: Maresca’s next big success story in the making

In our view, Mheuka represents everything Chelsea’s modern youth structure strives for — technical skill, self-belief, and maturity beyond his years. The pathway to the first team under Maresca has been clearer than ever, and Mheuka’s continued dominance at youth level suggests his promotion is not a question of if, but when.

Given his current form and attitude, it would be no surprise to see the striker handed more opportunities during the upcoming FA Cup and Carabao Cup rounds, where Maresca has shown a willingness to trust young players.
