Hamburg have intensified their search for a new centre-back, with Leeds United defender Sebastiaan Bornauw emerging as one of the club's leading transfer targets.
According to Hamburger Abendblatt, the Bundesliga side are keen to strengthen their defence following the departure of Luka Vušković, who returned to Tottenham Hotspur after his loan spell before completing a move to Brighton & Hove Albion.
The vacancy has left Hamburg actively exploring the market, with Bornauw among the players being seriously considered.
Bornauw high on Hamburg's shortlist
Hamburg sporting director Claus Costa is leading the search for defensive reinforcements and has been using the club's training camp in Herzogenaurach to hold discussions over potential arrivals.
The report states that Bornauw is regarded as the prime candidate to strengthen the back line and is one of three or four centre-backs under serious consideration.
The 27-year-old is believed to be keen on securing regular first-team football after an injury-hit and frustrating campaign at Elland Road. Last season, he made just 12 appearances, totalling 433 minutes across all competitions.
Leeds open to summer departure
A move away from Leeds now appears more realistic than it did earlier this year.
The Yorkshire club blocked Bornauw's departure during the January transfer window, but circumstances have changed following the arrival of Tarik Muharemović, who is expected to partner Jaka Bijol in Daniel Farke's preferred defence. Joe Rodon also remains ahead of Bornauw in the pecking order, leaving the Belgian facing limited opportunities.
With Bornauw potentially fourth-choice at Elland Road, Leeds are now understood to be open to negotiating a permanent transfer.
Bundesliga return gathering momentum
A return to Germany has long been viewed as the most likely outcome for Bornauw.
FC Köln previously explored a move during the winter transfer window and have continued to be linked with the defender. Hamburg have now joined the race as they look to replace Vušković ahead of the new Bundesliga campaign.
Bornauw already has extensive experience in German football from his spells with Köln and Wolfsburg, making him an attractive option for Hamburg as they seek an experienced defender capable of making an immediate impact.
Key Points
- Hamburg have made Sebastiaan Bornauw one of their priority defensive targets.
- The Bundesliga club are searching for a replacement for Luka Vušković.
- Bornauw managed just 433 minutes across 12 appearances for Leeds last season.
- Leeds are more open to a transfer than they were in January.
- FC Köln also remain interested in bringing the Belgian back to Germany.
What's next?
Hamburg are expected to continue talks with Leeds United as they assess their defensive options before the transfer window closes. With Bornauw eager for more regular football and Leeds reshaping their defensive hierarchy, a return to the Bundesliga is becoming an increasingly realistic outcome if the clubs can agree a transfer fee.
