Chelsea edged by Juventus as Mike Penders, Geovany Quenda and Danny Welbeck debut

Chelsea's pre-season preparations continued with a 1-0 defeat to Juventus in Hong Kong, although the match provided encouraging signs for Xabi Alonso as several new arrivals made their debuts.

Mike Penders, Geovany Quenda and Danny Welbeck all featured for the first time in Chelsea colours, while Mykhailo Mudryk returned from a lengthy absence with a late substitute appearance. Edon Zhegrova's superb second-half strike ultimately proved the difference between the sides.

Quenda and Welbeck were included in Alonso's starting XI and both made bright starts despite a cagey first half with few clear-cut chances.

The Portuguese winger looked lively down the right flank, creating Chelsea's first opportunity with a dangerous cross that João Pedro headed wide before later firing over from distance. Welbeck also linked play effectively during his opening 45 minutes.

Chelsea made several changes at half-time, with Penders replacing Robert Sánchez in goal, while Nicolas Jackson and Estêvão Willian were among those introduced.

Juventus found the breakthrough shortly after the hour mark when Edon Zhegrova curled an excellent left-footed effort beyond Penders from the edge of the penalty area.

Chelsea responded well and controlled possession for much of the closing stages, but struggled to break down the Italian side's organised defence.

Estêvão tested Mattia Perin from a free-kick, while Dário Anselmino also forced a save before Romeo Lavia narrowly missed the target with the final chance of the match.

Mudryk also made his long-awaited return during the closing minutes, marking his first appearance for Chelsea since November 2024.

Chelsea continue their pre-season tour with a meeting against AC Milan in Jakarta on Saturday. Alonso is expected to continue rotating his squad as the Blues build fitness and integrate their new signings ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
