Sasa Kalajdzic Wolves career has been defined by cruel luck with injuries — but the towering striker insists his only focus now is rebuilding himself at Linz.

The Austrian international, who joined Wolves from Stuttgart in 2022, has endured three separate cruciate ligament injuries in just five years. Now on loan in his homeland, he is targeting nothing more than consistent football and physical stability.

“My primary goal is not the national team, but my health and my career,” Kalajdzic told Heute. “The national team is an ulterior motive, that’s clear.”

It is a frank admission from a player who, at 27, should be entering his peak years but has instead seen his progress repeatedly stalled.

A Career Halted by Injuries

Kalajdzic’s injury record is sobering:

2019: First cruciate ligament tear – sidelined 264 days, 34 games missed.
2022: Second ACL tear shortly after joining Wolves – 275 days out, 43 games missed.
2024: Third ACL while on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt – 437 days out, 52 games missed.
In total, those three injuries have cost him over two years of football and more than 120 matches for club and country.

ACL Injury Days Out Games Missed
2019 (Stuttgart) 264 34
2022 (Wolves) 275 43
2024 (Frankfurt) 437 52

Such setbacks would have ended many careers, but Kalajdzic is determined to fight back once again.

Loan Move to Linz

Wolves manager Vítor Pereira made clear in August that Kalajdzic was not part of his immediate plans for 2025/26, paving the way for a loan move to Linz. For the striker, it offers the chance to play regularly away from the spotlight and rebuild confidence.

“It’s a big new step to take,” he said. “But my focus is only on getting back to full strength.”

Austria boss Ralf Rangnick backed the move, saying:

“It makes sense. For me, it’s crucial that he plays regularly and that he’s brought back into shape after his three cruciate ligament tears.” — Ralf Rangnick, Austria head coach

Rangnick remains open to recalling him if he regains fitness, but emphasised that club minutes must come first.

Wolves’ Perspective

For Wolves, sending Kalajdzic to Austria eases the squad picture while giving him the best chance of recovery. The Premier League club invested heavily in the forward in 2022, but have only seen him play a handful of games due to injuries.

With Hwang Hee-chan, Strand-Larsen, and young talent in attack, Pereira has other options for this season. A successful loan at Linz could either restore Kalajdzic as a Wolves option or put him in the shop window next summer.

Analyst Verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William believes the loan is the striker’s last real shot at salvaging his career at the top level:

“Three ACLs is almost unheard of for a striker. Kalajdzic’s resilience is admirable, but the reality is brutal — he needs consistent minutes at Linz, otherwise Wolves may have to move on permanently. For now, he’s saying the right things: focus on health, rebuild confidence, then think about Austria or the Premier League later.”

William added: “If he stays fit, his height, hold-up play, and aerial threat still make him a unique asset. But every game now feels like a test of durability.”

Key Insights

  • Sasa Kalajdzic suffered three ACL injuries since 2019, missing 120+ games.
  • The Wolves striker has joined Linz on loan after being frozen out by Vítor Pereira.
  • He insists health and career come before Austria national team ambitions.
  • Rangnick backs the move as vital for his recovery.
  • This season could define whether he returns to Wolves or moves permanently.

What’s Next?

Kalajdzic is expected to feature regularly for Linz in the Austrian Bundesliga, with Wolves closely monitoring his progress. Staying fit across the season will be the ultimate victory — and could open the door to a Wolves return or an Austria recall.

For now, his mission is simple: regain rhythm, rebuild confidence, and prove his body can withstand the demands of top-level football once again.

Can Sasa Kalajdzic revive his Wolves career — or has injury already rewritten his destiny?
