Sandro Tonali has declared himself fully fit and insisted Tottenham are not in crisis despite their nightmare start to the Premier League season.
Spurs broke their transfer record to sign the Italy international from Newcastle United for more than €100million during a summer in which they invested over €350m in Roberto De Zerbi’s squad.
However, that spending has yet to produce results. Tottenham remain without a Premier League victory after five matches and sit bottom of the table.
Tonali, though, believes their performances offer far more encouragement than the results suggest.
Tonali confirms he is back to 100%
The 26-year-old had been dealing with a minor physical problem earlier this month but managed to continue playing for Tottenham.
Speaking while away with Italy, Tonali confirmed the issue has now completely cleared.
“Physically, I’m 100% now; the discomfort I had has resolved. I’m ready to do my part,” he said.
Tonali has started all five of Tottenham's Premier League matches this season, with De Zerbi resting him entirely for their EFL Cup fixture.
The midfielder also stressed he is comfortable operating in different roles, whether deeper in midfield or as a playmaker.
Tottenham results not matching performances
Tonali's arrival was one of the headline deals of Tottenham's huge summer rebuild, but he is still waiting for his first Premier League victory with the club.
Nevertheless, the former Newcastle midfielder does not believe their position accurately reflects what is happening on the pitch.
“We’re having fun and creating chances,” Tonali explained. “If you don’t score in football, you lose.”
He described Tottenham's situation as negative in terms of results but positive from a footballing perspective, insisting the squad remains confident in its quality.
“We’re not in the doldrums; we’re alive and well, and we’re positive. We know the team is very strong.”
De Zerbi needs results after huge investment
Tottenham's poor start inevitably places pressure on De Zerbi after the club backed him heavily during the transfer window.
The Italian coach helped Spurs avoid relegation after taking charge in March, eventually guiding them to a 17th-place finish.
The expectation has changed significantly following their enormous summer investment, with Tonali among the most expensive additions.
For now, however, the midfielder believes patience is required.
He pointed out how quickly situations can change in football and remains convinced Tottenham possess the quality to turn their season around.
Key Points
- Tonali says he is now “100%” fit after overcoming a recent problem.
- Tottenham paid more than €100m to sign him from Newcastle in July.
- Spurs remain winless after five Premier League matches and sit bottom.
- Tonali insists their performances have been better than their results suggest.
- Tottenham return to action against Manchester United after the international break.
What’s Next?
Tonali's clean bill of health is an important boost for De Zerbi ahead of Tottenham's return to Premier League action.
Spurs now need that fitness boost to translate into results.
Their performances may have provided Tonali with reasons for optimism, but a team assembled following more than €350m of summer investment cannot afford to remain at the bottom of the table for long.
The trip to Manchester United therefore represents an immediate opportunity to change the mood around the club and finally secure a first league victory of the season.
Tonali will also want to return to north London on a positive note after Italy's defeat to Belgium. Before then, he has another opportunity to impress when the Azzurri face Turkey.
