Fresh reports from Germany insist it was Said El Mala himself who decided against joining Brentford this summer, rather than his mother and agent, Sabrina El Mala.
The highly-rated FC Köln forward had appeared on course for a move to the Premier League after Brentford agreed to meet the Bundesliga club's reported €50 million valuation.
However, negotiations collapsed before the final round of talks, prompting widespread speculation over why the transfer failed to materialise.
Brentford agreement fell through
Earlier reports suggested El Mala's mother, who also represents the player, had withdrawn from negotiations while waiting for a stronger offer to emerge elsewhere.
According to Express, that version of events is inaccurate.
The publication claims the El Mala family did pull out before decisive discussions were completed, but the decision was ultimately made by the player himself after concluding Brentford was not the right destination for this stage of his career.
The report adds that El Mala informed FC Köln sporting director Thomas Kessler directly that he did not believe a move to west London suited his long-term ambitions.
Player willing to wait for other opportunities
Financially, the proposed transfer would have been extremely lucrative.
Reports suggest El Mala could have earned around €30 million over a five-year contract with Brentford, yet the financial package was not enough to persuade the 19-year-old to complete the move.
Instead, he is prepared to remain patient and assess what opportunities emerge later in the transfer window.
Having enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in the Bundesliga, El Mala is regarded as one of Germany's brightest young attacking talents. His impressive performances have naturally attracted interest from several clubs, and he appears confident that further offers could arrive before the window closes.
However, waiting also carries an element of risk. Brentford were willing to meet FC Köln's valuation, and there is no guarantee another club will match those financial terms or present a more attractive sporting project.
FC Köln continue to await clarity
El Mala's future remains one of the biggest questions facing FC Köln this summer.
The German club had been close to completing a major sale before negotiations unexpectedly broke down, leaving both player and club with important decisions to make over the coming weeks.
While Brentford could still revive their interest if circumstances change, there is currently no indication that fresh talks are imminent.
What's next?
El Mala is expected to continue evaluating his options while FC Köln remain open to a transfer should an acceptable offer arrive. Brentford may yet revisit the situation later in the window, although the Premier League club could also turn their attention towards alternative attacking targets.
With several weeks of the transfer window remaining, the teenager's next move is likely to depend on whether another club presents the sporting opportunity he believes better fits his long-term development.
Do you think Said El Mala made the right decision by rejecting Brentford, or should he have taken the opportunity to move to the Premier League?
