Sacha Boey left in Bayern Munich limbo after Everton transfer collapsed

Sacha Boey faces an uncertain future at Bayern Munich after a deadline-day move to Everton collapsed and the Bundesliga champions subsequently failed to find another destination for the defender.

The 25-year-old had been identified as one of the players Bayern wanted to move on during the summer transfer window. Everton emerged as a potential destination late in the window, but the proposed move failed to materialise.

Bayern then looked towards Saudi Arabia in a final attempt to find Boey a new club. However, that route has now disappeared as well, leaving the Frenchman in an increasingly difficult position in Munich.

According to Abendzeitung München, Bayern sporting bosses Max Eberl and Christoph Freund had hoped to use the Saudi transfer window to move their final remaining candidate for a summer sale.

One potential deal reportedly collapsed at the last moment, meaning Boey is now expected to remain at Bayern despite having little prospect of regular football.

The situation is particularly frustrating because there appears to be no obvious route back into the starting XI.

Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanisic are already ahead of Boey in the right-back hierarchy. Bayern’s signing of Nathaniel Brown also means Laimer and Stanisic should be required less frequently as cover on the opposite flank, further reducing Boey’s opportunities.

A transfer to Everton would have presented a very different scenario.

Boey was expected to have a strong opportunity to establish himself as David Moyes’ first-choice right-back. Everton eventually strengthened the position with Ainsley Maitland-Niles, but Boey could still have arrived with a far clearer route to regular football than he currently has in Germany.

Instead, he remains at a club which had actively attempted to sell him.

That leaves both Bayern and Boey with an uncomfortable few months ahead. The German club have been unable to remove his wages from their payroll, while the defender faces the prospect of spending the first half of the season on the fringes.

Unless his position changes unexpectedly, January could now represent the next realistic opportunity for Bayern and Boey to find a permanent solution.

Boey will have to fight for minutes at Bayern despite being outside their long-term plans. If his situation does not improve before the winter, Bayern are likely to explore another transfer in January, when Everton or other interested clubs could potentially return.
