Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon gave an honest assessment of his side’s display in their 3-1 loss at Aston Villa, admitting that lapses in concentration cost them the match.
Raul Jiménez had given Fulham an early lead, but goals from Ollie Watkins, John McGinn and Emiliano Buendia turned the game around as Marco Silva’s side left Villa Park empty-handed.
Sessegnon: “We kind of just collapsed”
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Sessegnon didn’t hide his frustration with Fulham’s defending.
“We started the game very well then conceded quite a bizarre first goal but going into half-time at 1-1, it’s still a decent result but we kind of just collapsed, to be honest. We conceded one straight after half-time which can happen but to concede the next one straightaway was disappointing. The game was pretty much done after that. There is no real explanations, it’s just poor defending from us. Quite unusual from us but we have to look back at the game and see where we went wrong.” — Ryan Sessegnon, Sky Sports
The defender pointed to a lack of focus as the reason behind the collapse: “It was probably just lack of concentration, it was very bizarre. We have to pick ourselves up and go again. Hopefully on Friday against Bournemouth we can put it right.”

Sessegnon was heavily involved defensively, with four tackles and four clearances, but his high number of possession losses (19) reflected Fulham’s struggles under Villa’s pressing.
Analyst verdict
FootballPlace analyst John William said Fulham’s performance highlighted inconsistency at the back. “Sessegnon’s honesty tells the story. Fulham looked sharp early on but mentally switched off after half-time. Against a side like Villa, that’s fatal. The defensive unit crumbled, and Villa punished them.”
He added: “Fulham now face a huge test against Bournemouth. If the concentration issues aren’t fixed, the same mistakes could repeat.”
