Aston Villa striker Rory Wilson emerges as IFK Göteborg transfer target

Aston Villa youngster Rory Wilson has emerged as a transfer target for IFK Göteborg, with the Swedish club considering attacking reinforcements before the summer window closes.

Göteborg director Jesper Jansson stopped short of directly confirming negotiations for Wilson but acknowledged the 20-year-old's name when questioned about reports linking the club with the Villa striker.

Friday's edition of Göteborgs-Posten reports that Wilson is among the players being considered as Göteborg assess their options in the final weeks of the window.

Asked directly about the Aston Villa youngster, Jansson was reluctant to reveal the club's transfer plans.

"I do not want to go into what we are looking for during the window."

Pressed specifically on Wilson, he added: "Yes, what can I say? If we are interested in a player, only a fraction of them make it to the media."

While that falls short of confirming a deal is being negotiated, Wilson is reported to be one of the names on Göteborg's shortlist.

Göteborg's search for another forward comes amid uncertainty surrounding their existing attacking options.

Max Fenger is dealing with physical problems, while Pascal Lundqvist is also unavailable.

Jansson admitted those situations are influencing the work being done behind the scenes.

"We have had a bit of a messy year."

The uncertainty could therefore increase the need for an attacking addition before the transfer deadline.

The Swedish side are also in a stronger financial position to make additions.

Player sales have provided extra funds, while Göteborg have generated further income from their European campaign, including sold-out home fixtures against Levadia and Gent.

Jansson confirmed the club now has greater financial flexibility, although he stressed they will not spend simply because more money is available.

"It is clear that this gives us a little more security and a little more space."

He added that Göteborg have a budget to work with but will remain patient when deciding where to invest.

That could put them in a position to pursue Wilson if the Villa youngster becomes their preferred attacking target.

For now, there is no confirmation that a formal offer has been submitted to Aston Villa, meaning Göteborg's interest remains at the consideration stage.

IFK Göteborg must decide whether to turn their interest in Wilson into a concrete approach to Aston Villa. Their need for another striker could become more pressing depending on Fenger's recovery, while the club now has additional financial room to strengthen.
