Robin van Persie Aston Villa warning has raised the stakes ahead of a high-profile Europa League showdown in Rotterdam. Feyenoord’s manager, a Premier League legend in his own right, singled out Ollie Watkins as Villa’s danger man, insisting his team have prepared specifically for the England striker.

Villa arrive in the Netherlands buoyed by back-to-back victories that have lifted spirits after a difficult start to the season. Emery’s side had gone six games without a win before Matty Cash’s spectacular strike against Sunderland sparked a turnaround. That was followed by John McGinn’s winner against Bologna in Europe and a comeback 3-1 triumph over Fulham in the league.

Now, the Villans look to maintain momentum on the continental stage. Feyenoord, however, are no strangers to top-level competition, having stunned AC Milan and Bayern Munich last term en route to the Champions League last 16, while also producing a remarkable comeback draw at Manchester City.

Van Persie singles out Watkins

Van Persie made clear in his pre-match press conference that Watkins is a striker his defenders cannot afford to lose sight of.

“I think his runs, the way he moves. He is really direct as a striker and has a really good feel for space,” Van Persie said. “He is fast, technical, and in the box is where his qualities lay. He will be a big threat against us tomorrow. He is definitely one of their threats. We had a meeting about Aston Villa this morning. He was in it quite a bit.”

For Watkins, this renewed attention comes as he looks to build on his confidence-boosting lobbed finish against Fulham, a strike that ended a ten-game drought for club and country.

Watkins’ European record

Watkins has scored nine goals in 25 European appearances for Aston Villa. While his Champions League campaign last season was frustrating at times due to reduced minutes, he will lead the line in Rotterdam as Emery aims to take a major step toward knockout qualification.

While his strike rate is respectable, Villa will hope Watkins can rediscover the form that saw him become a consistent Premier League scorer last season.

Analyst verdict

FootballPlace analyst John William observed: “For Van Persie to single out Watkins shows how much respect he commands. Feyenoord know his movement and finishing can decide matches. If Villa supply him properly, he has the qualities to punish even well-drilled defences.”

He added: “Watkins breaking his drought against Fulham was perfectly timed. It means he goes into this clash with renewed confidence. That could be decisive in what looks a finely balanced encounter.”

Key insights

  • Robin van Persie says Watkins is Feyenoord’s biggest concern.
  • Villa arrive on the back of wins over Bologna and Fulham.
  • Watkins ended a ten-game drought with a lob vs Fulham.
  • Nine goals in 25 European appearances underline his pedigree.
  • Van Persie called Villa “favourites” in Rotterdam despite Feyenoord’s record.

What’s next for Villa?

Villa’s trip to De Kuip offers a chance to underline their European credentials. A win would consolidate their position in the group and further build confidence after a shaky start to the season.

Emery knows Feyenoord will test his side, but with Watkins sharp and motivated, Villa’s hopes of victory rest firmly on their No9’s shoulders.

I dont think van Persie has watched Villa this season, but he's anything like that anymore.
