Sunderland head coach Régis Le Bris believes his side learned important Premier League lessons after being forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland controlled much of the first half and took a deserved lead through Simon Adingra, but a strong Leeds response after the break ensured the points were shared.
Bright first half sets the tone
Adingra opened the scoring with his first goal for the Black Cats, finishing calmly after a perfectly weighted through-ball from Granit Xhaka. The assist was Xhaka’s fifth of the season — a tally bettered only by Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and Manchester City’s Rayan Cherki so far this campaign.
Sunderland could have doubled their advantage before the interval. Trai Hume produced a crucial goal-line clearance to deny Brenden Aaronson, while Brian Brobbey was twice thwarted in stoppage time — first by Lucas Perri when clean through, and then by the crossbar with a header from Adingra’s delivery.
Leeds fight back after the break
Those missed chances proved costly. Leeds emerged with renewed intensity after half-time and equalised just two minutes into the second period when Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck his seventh top-flight goal in six appearances.
The visitors then enjoyed a spell of sustained pressure, forcing Sunderland to defend deeply before gradually regaining a foothold in the contest. Despite late moments of promise, neither side could find a winner.
The draw moves Sunderland to 28 points from 18 games and extends their unbeaten home run to eight matches.
Le Bris: ‘A good lesson for us’
Speaking after the match, Le Bris reflected on the shift in momentum and the value of the experience.
“It was a tough game, as expected,” he said.
“Leeds are a good side and they are in good form. We started well and we scored, and even at the end of the first half we had the opportunity to score a second goal.
“That was a key moment because after that they changed their structure and we struggled to find our rhythm and reference points.”
Le Bris acknowledged Leeds’ dominance after the restart but praised his players’ response.
“They dominated, but we found the energy to shift the momentum. At the end of the game we had the opportunity to be a bit more dangerous, but I think it is a fair result in the end.”
Praise for Adingra and home resilience
The Sunderland boss reserved special praise for goalscorer Adingra, highlighting the importance of belief and team support.
“I am happy for Simon because it shows that, for every player, there can be doubts over you,” Le Bris said.
“His teammates were behind him and this helped him during the process — hopefully this will help him in the future.”
Le Bris also emphasised the significance of Sunderland’s home consistency.
“It is really positive that we are still unbeaten on home soil, especially during tough moments. When it is harder, it is important to stay consistent and maintain the level of energy.
“The dressing room is disappointed right now, and that shows their desire to win.”
