Manchester City defender Rayan Aït-Nouri will reportedly have to publicly apologise before being allowed to return to the Algeria national team following his controversial departure from the latest camp.

The 25-year-old left the squad after a disagreement surrounding his involvement against Zambia, with reports in Algeria claiming teammates and coaching staff were unhappy with his behaviour.

Aït-Nouri has since been released from international duty, and there is now uncertainty over when he will represent his country again.

Aït-Nouri row escalated against Zambia

Algeria manager Brahim Hemdani selected Brighton defender Jaouen Hadjam ahead of Aït-Nouri for the Nations League meeting with Zambia.

According to reports in Algeria, Hemdani initially prepared to introduce the Manchester City defender before changing his plans after Zambia equalised.

When Algeria later regained the lead, Aït-Nouri was reportedly asked to enter the game again but refused.

His behaviour on the bench was also said to have caused frustration within the squad, with teammates and Hemdani attempting to calm him down.

Aït-Nouri subsequently asked to leave the Algeria camp. Reports claimed his request was eventually accepted after he repeatedly pushed to be released.

Public apology reportedly required

El Khabar reports that the decision to release Aït-Nouri followed discussions within the national-team setup and had the approval of Algerian Football Federation president Walid Sadi.

DZ54 has now reported that there is a route back into the squad, but it comes with a significant condition.

Aït-Nouri must reportedly make a formal public apology to Algeria’s coaching staff and supporters, either through the media or on social media.

The report describes that demand as a “non-negotiable condition” for his return.

The intention is reportedly to repair the damage caused within the squad and restore morale following the incident.

Questions over Aït-Nouri’s situation

DZ54 also makes claims about Aït-Nouri's psychological state when he arrived at the camp, describing him as withdrawn and speaking little.

However, those claims should be treated cautiously. There is no medical diagnosis provided in the report, and the descriptions do not establish that Aït-Nouri has any mental-health condition.

What is clearer from the reporting is that a dispute developed over his involvement against Zambia and ultimately resulted in his departure from the squad.

For Manchester City, the immediate consequence is that Aït-Nouri has returned from international duty earlier than originally expected.

Whether he is involved with Algeria during their next international window may now depend on whether he accepts the reported demand for a public apology.

Key Points

  • Rayan Aït-Nouri left Algeria’s camp following a dispute surrounding the Zambia match.
  • Algerian reports claim he refused to come on after previously being sent back to the bench.
  • His behaviour reportedly angered members of the squad and coaching staff.
  • A public apology to the staff and supporters is reportedly a “non-negotiable” requirement for his return.
  • Claims about his psychological state are not supported by a stated medical diagnosis.

What’s Next

Attention will now turn to whether Aït-Nouri responds publicly to the controversy.

If the reports are accurate, an apology would clear an important obstacle to his Algeria return. Without one, his international future could remain uncertain despite his established role with the national team.

At club level, Aït-Nouri will return his focus to Manchester City after making only two appearances so far this season.
