Bernd Leno has heaped praise on Bayern Munich goalkeeper Jonas Urbig amid reports the German champions are considering a move for the Fulham star next summer.

Bayern are reportedly looking at experienced goalkeepers who could provide competition and support for Urbig, with Manuel Neuer expected to retire at the end of the season.

Leno has emerged as one potential option, and his Fulham contract is due to expire next summer.

Leno impressed by Bayern goalkeeper Urbig

Speaking to WAZ about Germany’s future goalkeeper situation, Leno was asked who could succeed Neuer as the national team’s long-term number one.

The 34-year-old believes Bayern youngster Urbig has the qualities required.

“For me, [Neuer] was the best,” Leno said. “In my opinion, however, some young, talented boys are coming up.”

The Fulham goalkeeper then specifically identified Urbig.

“In my view, the choice should be made on Jonas Urbig. He needs to be prepared to be number one in the future.

“What I see of him is very impressive. He is very talented, has excellent reflexes and is especially brave.”

Bayern reportedly considering Leno move

Those comments come at an interesting time given the speculation surrounding Leno himself.

Reports from Germany this week claimed Bayern have included the Fulham goalkeeper among their options for next summer.

The Bundesliga club are said to want an experienced goalkeeper who could work alongside Urbig rather than block his development.

That could potentially make Leno an attractive candidate. He has extensive Premier League and Bundesliga experience, having previously played for Bayer Leverkusen before joining Arsenal and later Fulham.

His contract situation could also be important, with his current Fulham deal set to expire next summer.

Leno could be open to Germany return

There have also been suggestions Leno would be interested in finishing his career in Munich, with a move back to Germany bringing him closer to his family.

His latest comments certainly demonstrate how highly he rates the goalkeeper Bayern appear to be planning around for the future.

There is no indication Leno's praise for Urbig was connected to Bayern's reported transfer interest, and there is currently no suggestion an agreement is close.

However, his apparent willingness to back Urbig's development would hardly damage his credentials if Bayern ultimately decide they want an experienced goalkeeper alongside the youngster next season.
